Sunday, Feb 24 2008 - Breaking the soda habit
View MOUGHI's food & exercise for this day
Water, Water, water that's all my mother kept saying to me. Lory stop drinking sodas and drink more water. Well, I have decreased the amount of diet drinks I used to drink by at least 90% thanks to sensitivity problems to equal. Can't eat or drink any products with equal in them in large quantities without getting big headaches, so I don't. I did find some no preservatives, no sodium,no caffeine splenda sodas ( diet Hansen's ) that taste pretty good and come in a lot of flavors. They don't give me a headache. Still, I hear all the up roar about artificial sweeteners so now I'm faced with whether I'll have to give up these. I have how ever started to limit myself to just a few a day. My mother be proud. Now if I can get my hubby to drink water! What is it about we Americans that we don't like drinking water? If you tasted Houston's water maybe you would understand. Well I don't live in Houston proper and my water doesn't actually come from their source, it's actually worse according to the latest info our water company sent out. " Warning! Tap water may turn under age children's teeth grey due to too much fluoride. On down the page it read that you may want to check with the dentist on options. The best options were to use bottle water until the situation could be taken care of. Yea right! We have a cooler in our house so I do enjoy bottle water. That's why I don't mind drinking the water any more. I did find it amusing one night as I watched Alton Brown of the food channel do a whole show on bottled water and where it came from. I am now an educated consumer. My water comes from an underground spring. I wish I could remember how to spell all the places water came from or I'ld share it with you, but every bottle has to tell you were the water came from. Be careful, you could be buying regular tap water. Now, I'm going green soon. I'm going to invest in my own water jugs that can be washed out and re-used so I won't be using those disposable plastic water bottles. Yea, I'm a save the planet type of person. I figure I can help here by doing this. Well, back to the soda verse water thing. I know water is better for me, but soda is more fun. Water makes me feel better, soda makes me feel bloated at time. Water does not make me feel hungry, sometimes soda does. Verdict, drink more water and less soda, and make sure you know where the water is coming from. See you Monday for recipe day.

A couple weeks ago I decided that the D. Coke had to be cut back, I don't think it is healthy, makes your body think food is coming so it messes with your metabolism. I switched to ice tea, always having a pitcher ready in the frig. It has gone pretty well, I enjoy the tea and haven't missed the soda much. I still have a D.Coke if we are eating out or eating popcorn. I drink quite a bit of water also but it does get boring.

Diet Rite sodas are made with Splenda too--if you're looking for another option. I totally know what you mean about trying to drink more water than soda. I started drinking the Diet Hansen's (I love the root beer and the grapefruit ones best) and Diet Rite (Tangerine is my favorite) and I realized I wasn't drinking water as much so I try to limit how many I drink. True Lemon and True Lime packets have helped me drink more water at work. It's a tiny packet of flavoring without any sweetner in it. The other thing I do is get Lemon-Lime flavored Selzer water--no sweetners in it, it's fizzy and it's got a mild flavor.

"but soda is more fun" haha - yes, I know exactly what you mean. If you're drinking to avoid eating, then it's much more appealing to drink some diet drink because, well, it has flavor - as does food! The way I see it, drinking no-calorie non-water drinks is totally fine if it works for you in terms of keeping you from eating too much food. So I don't see any reason why you should stop with the splenda drinks. Ha, this is the most unhealthy advice probably ever given - but, seriously, I don't see splenda filled drinks as being oh-so awful! I say it's a minor vice compared to lots of other possible diet vices...
