Thursday, Mar 27 2008 - Cravings and Temptations

View MOUGHI's food & exercise for this day

I was reading on a new blog I came across ( "Diet Blog";) that if you can with stand what ever craving you are having for 20 minutes, the craving should go away. In other words, keep yourself busy for 20 -30 minutes while you are thinking about that craving and it might go away. Well, it seems every time I've been grocery shopping lately I have had a problem with cravings and temptations. Sure I've eaten before hand, made a list, and kept to the outside of the store. I've tried to mind proof myself to all things that could distract me. Lately, I find myself struggling with those thoughts even tough I have not given into them. Well, I did but some All Bran crackers, whoopie, 130 cals a serving 5 grams of fiber... my big splurge, and I did decide to make a home made turkey pizza ( diabetic recipe), but it took everything I had not to buy those weight watcher deserts which would kill my blood sugar. They really looked good. You normal people can eat those, but this girl shouldn't and knows it. I've managed to get my A1c down to normal by not eating sugary foods so these are no nos for me as a rule. What do when it hits...walk around the room... bite your nails... give in... confess it to your mate...buy it ?Part of being successful in dieting is being able to overcome these cravings and temptations. I would like to know how everyone one else is cooping. It also helps to make a list and stick when shopping in a store. I also take my husband with me shopping sometimes. He keeps me honest. Sometimes if I just save that item I think I want for the last thing to pick up, I find I don't want it after all. Now, what I shared pertained to cravings you get while shopping in a grocery store where foods is concerned. I'm sure this all relates to while being at home too.
All this is food for thought. See ya latter.

I have had trouble with this the past couple of days and I always think there is a mind/emotional issue going on. Sometimes I figure out what is bugging me, sometimes I don't!:$ It must be really hard not to be able to have even a bite of something sugary because of health reasons. If I eat something sweet my only consequence is weight gain (and a guilty conscience!). You are doing so great, don't ever forget that!!

My husband and I go grocery shopping each weekend. Our rule is that we each get to pick one "treat" item. With only one thing that I like to snack on in the house, it makes it much easier to cope when the munchies hit. I also eat a lot of volume foods (veggies), so my stomach is often so distended after dinner that I just can't snack!

Cravings have been really really hard for me to... I am known as the "Cookie Monster", I just haven't had the will power to turn down a fresh chocolate chip cookie. I am like you and have to watch my blood sugar. I am hypoglycemic, and have been warned that if I don't eat right (low/ moderate glycemic values) and lose weight, I am looking at diabetes. My hypoglycemia rarely acts up, because I TRY to eat better normally, but when it does act up... wow... I hit the 30s and 40s. So the weight watchers desserts are out for me too :cry4: . I was making desserts with Splenda, and then I found out the main ingredient in Splenda is Maltodextrin (caking agent). It is very high on the glycemic scale. Now I use Stevia if I can. Most sugar free stuff is made with Splenda, so now if I get a craving... I just go for the "real" thing unfortunately. I do eat much smaller portions than I once allowed myself though. I also have really started to rely on the protein-carb link. If I eat a cookie I usually have a glass of milk or eat it right after I have my serving of meat with lunch or dinner. The protein links itself to the sugars and keeps it from spiking your insulin. The rule of thumb is 2 to 1. If your food has 40 carbs in it, make sure you eat something with at least 20 grams of protein with it. I learned that in one of the gazillions :bigeyes3:of diet books I have read, and it has been the best thing for me regarding my blood sugar. I really like fruit with the stevia on it... so I try to keep that around. Still, its not my chocolate or bananas foster... but hey... what can ya do?

I, too, think the blogs are more personal, and wish we would get points from them like the forums. I've been here since February but I've yet to participate in any of the forum threads...I have read them, but I haven't commented or participated at all...I don't really know why, I think I just prefer blogging and commenting on blogs! :smile1:

like you Marjorieo, one other way I avoid temptation is to keep certain things out of my house. Also, like you the more I don't eat certain food's the less I want them too. Occasionally I still get a craving for a piece of sugar free candy, but then I think of the higher blood sugar results and it helps calm me down:drunk::sad3:

Thanks for your wise comments on my blog. I'm so glad I "met" you. :teeth1: I find that the more I avoid the foods that tempt me the less I crave them. If I don't eat fried foods (especially french fries) for a long time I don't care about having them. This is especially true of sweets and bread/pasta foods.
