Sunday, Oct 19 2008 - resisting food while serving food

View MOUGHI's food & exercise for this day

I did ok food wise. Tonight at church I am helping out with the refreshments for the evening Bible study group. This means I am the one responsible to set up, clean up, and make friendly reminder calls to those who said they would bring food. So, here I am, coming to the recovery group as a recovering food addict helping serve the refreshments ! What a test for sure. One of the new policies is that the food will no longer be eaten in the room nor kept in the actual class room in order to help people like me. ( Thankfully ), but my temptations to grab an unneeded bite is there as I clean up or set up. Believe me there was temptation tonight. Yes, I could have not volunteered for this job, but there was a reason why I did. I love hospitality type jobs and I had something to prove to myself. I had to prove I could be around food and not eat it. If I ever wanted a healthy relationship with food and still wanted to enjoy preparing food for other people, I would have to learn how to prepare it and not eat what I am preparing. What a way to learn this discipline but in little things like setting up a snack table. So far I managed to put a Cheesecake Factory cheese cake on the table tonight and cut it up without even tasting the whip cream that got on my fingers. The pasta salad I admit I had a taste of and I did try one taste of the Cedar's Artichoke hummus too, but that was it. The spring rolls, chips, dips, popcorn, cookies, and salad, I looked at with a sigh and remembered that it is better to be thin than to taste everything people bought. Now, I did eat the rest of my dinner when I got home and feel a little hungry now as I have had some blood sugar problems today.I might have eaten a little more than the a lotted amount of calories today, but I didn't over eat in like a person out of control or someone on a binge. There was control in my ways today, more so than in the past, even in the area of night time eating. I think this means I am getting stronger in the area of resisting food when needed. Oh, I still have to work on the night time area the most and hitting the exact calorie count right on the most, but I feel I am making progress.
In the mean time, my walking is improving. I walked 2 miles Friday on the treadmill. It took me 45 minutes at 2.4 speed. OK< may be slow by a lot of you alls standards, but for my SI joint, that was flying ! The big thing that made this special was I had no pain that lingered afterwards. This must mean I am getting stronger and can tolerate walking better. NOTE; I said pain that lingered. I always have some kind of pain when I walk, it's just a matter of how much I have and how well I can tolerate it in order to walk however far I need to walk. In the past if I went too far too fast, I would have a lot of pain and could not walk for several days there after. I am beginning to be able to walk more days in a row, for longer periods, at faster times with minimal pain after I walk. This is exciting. OK, enough for tonight. Will try to get to everyone's blogs tomorrow. See you tomorrow.

Whooo hoooo 2 miles. And NO lingering pain is AWESOME. YAY. I think facing your demons IS an important way to beat the challenges -- and you are hitting them head on. Good for you!

Hi Lory! Thanks for your nice message on my blog. This is my 5th year teaching, but my first year at a new school. It feels like my first teaching though :smile1: You have come so far! I'm so happy to hear that you're able to incorporate weights into your routine now!! That's incredible! :thumbu2: To answer your question about your workout, I think the break down you have is a good one (15 mins. stretch/30 mins. walking/30 mins. weights). I typically do 3 days of weight training a week and cardio on the other days. So for example, I do M,W,F full body weights and on Tues/Thurs/Sun cardio. Typically, I take 1 day off a week from working out (recently it's been more than that though because I feel off the workout wagon). One question, I have though is can you get off of the treadmill to do weights and back on the treadmill after about 2 mins or are there people using the equipment? I know sometimes that's hard to do if you are in a gym (especially if it's a busy one). That workout is a combination of weights & cardio all in one (Interval training). It's a time saver and it helps blast the calories. Check out my blog and I'll post my routine on there to help explain the interval training. If getting off of the equipment and back on again isn't convenient, then I'd stick to what you're currently doing. Definitely get the weights in about 3 days a week and be sure to rest your muscles for 24 hours. Make sure you're not doing your weights back to back. I hope this helps. Congratulations again on your progress. YOU are an inspiration to me.

From a fellow Texan, I can tell you, walking on the treadmill is harder that walking on land and 2.4 mph is not that slow when you are first starting out. I don't think I got to 45 min when I started several months ago.--at about the same speed! You are doing great! Thanks for you sweet note on my blog, another dear friend suggested the same class to me...I will have to look into it.
Thanks again!

You're doing great Lory. That's quite a spread for your meeting! Our support group lasted only 1 hour....and pretty much started on time and ended on time, and no food. Not even coffee. You're right about facing the food. Today I baked chocolate chip cookies for the baby shower. I have a lot to make for the shower, so I'll be cooking all week. I did what you did today too---wouldn't even lick the spoon, and I was tempted a few times. Good job on the exercise. I'm glad you're not having any lingering pain anymore. Miriam is right - it's the time, not the speed.

it is better to be thin than to taste. I must remember that one. You are doing great with your exercise. It is not the speed, it is the time that does it. How many people walk 45 minutes?

Hi Iory! You are so awesome! I think it's wonderful that you are learning to enjoy the providing of hospitality, without partaking of the goodies. You must have felt very proud of yourself after you got home and had your healthy meal... Congratulations on another positive experience with food! And look at you go on the treadmill. I can imagine how difficult is has been for you to doing this -- it would be easy to simply avoid the pain. But, you know that in the long run, that would be the worse thing for you. Just keeping building up that strength slowly and consistently and hopefully some day you won't have the pain at all! Thanks for you supportive comments on my blog. I'm feeling okay today. In the coughing stage...ugh. I've loved watching Smallville. I'm watching Season 5 now. Can you believe that? That's a lot of DVD watching! This would have taken me forever to watch if I hadn't gotten ill! Take care and have a great week.:wave1:
