View MOUGHI's food & exercise for this day

I goofed up this week and broke even because of self sabotage, but I'm doing better this week. I'm not beating myself over the head with it which is a good thing. In the past I would have. I don't have much time to blog tonight as I have plenty of home work to do. My First Place for Health class is basic but is being taught by a very experienced teacher. This makes it interesting because she is also a nurse and has made things that I have learned in diabetic and pump class make since. I have learned to read labels from a carb stand point and not really from a " what is a serving of this and that " idea. I kind of knew all of that from reading my ADA book, but never really thought about it.

I think knowing just calories is not enough. It is helpful to know food servings in order to know correct portion sizes and to make sure the calories add up to those portions. This class reminded me of that. For example a grain is 15 carbs/ 3 proteins / trace fat / 80 calories. If it's over that it's more than a serving. We learned in diabetic class that 1 oz of bread is a serving or about 15 carbs. Some breads are 100 calories and weigh 1.24 oz. These breads are obviously not one serving. You'll pick this up if you are counting calories, maybe. Only if you are weighing the bread. If you are doing points you will miss it, if you don't weigh it. Well, you will miss it any way if you don't weigh it. For some people the small discrepancy won't matter, but if you can only eat 1200 calories it might make a difference. Bread is no big deal. It's meat that usually gets me though because of the fat content. Guessing that is harder.

That's why I like this formula : Lean meat / 7gP / 3g fat = 55 cal per oz
med fat meat 7gP / 5gfat = 75 cal per oz
high fat meat 7 gP / 8gfat = 100 cal per oz
now it made sense to me on this guessing game. If I couldn't find what I was looking for in the food diary, go by this chart, add in extra fat I might be adding to the meal, and I would at least have a guess. I know it's not THAT simple. Duck has more calories than chicken. But at least I'm beginning to understand why.

Now if there is or if someone would just develop a calorie meter you could stick in food that would read the calories and fat in food so I could just stick it in my food and take out all of my guess work ! I would be the first one in line to buy that thing.

And I'd be right behind you to buy one of those too! =D The Insulin Resistance Diet book has opened my eyes up about watching my carb intake better. I already didn't eat any white flour products and very few grains but I would freely eat any fruit or veggies I wanted. I'm trying to be more conscientious about those carbs too and always linking a protein to the carbs.
