Thursday, Mar 10 2011 - How much do I spend on groceries ?
View MOUGHI's food & exercise for this day
My Husband and I have been taking a financial peace course. My job is to figure how much spend at the grocery store, on the medical care for the dogs, their treats and grooming, household up keep, cosmetics, medical drugs and doctor stuff on me, etc. Get the point. Hubby has the bills, the car up keeps and home care etc. Then we are suppose to get together and figure out first where everything is really going. It is called a " 0 " budget. That is the first step. It is surprising to find out just how much I am spending at the grocery store. Then to find out how much of that is really on food and how much of that was on unnecessary junk food or unplanned food. There wasn't much junk food on my bills, but plenty of unplanned spending.
This unplanned spending, or unplanned food, was food I didn't need to be eating. It wasn't junk food, but food like crackers, extra cereal, cheese etc., or stuff I just thought I had to take advantage of because it was on sale. I call it a budget blower and sometimes a waist blower. I am learning that my spending habits is some what linked to my over eating habit and hoarding habit. Yikes, in this economy where every penny counts, I amy facing a harsh reality. In order to eat healthy, I am going to have to be very frugal.
I have always been good about planning my meals and going to the store with a list. Now I have to put that and the reality that any extra buying outside of my list will have severe consequences not only to my health, but to my goals of getting out of debt. It has even made me more determined to give up my soda drinking ways and ask God to help me LOVE water. That ought to make my son in law happy and a few of my friends real happy. I'll let you all know how this journey goes. It's just another battle I am going through. HA HA, but I think I'm not alone on this one though.

I love the idea of the church having these types of meetings. I wish our parish or more local ones would do more.
:)
I am going to have to start to really plan out the entire week and just stick with it and when we go to the store only buy those items. It is so easy to say awe lets grab this, we haven't had it in a long time
To answer your question, I fast meat on Ash Wednesday and then every Friday till Easter.

In the past month or so I started putting together weekly menus and noticed I was spending about $20 less at the grocery a week on average. Unfortunately due to the kitchen remodel that's all been blown away but hopefully I'll get back to it soon

Lots of unplanned gro. spending on our end as well. I go to the store with list in hand but we always seem to buy one or two items not on the list. Last week we spent a little over a $100 in the gro store and I kid you not, the next day my hb comes home from Sams Club with three items at nearly $60. We already have a freezer full of food out in the garage and another inside the house. I think he and I need to sit down and come up with a weekly menu on how we are going to use up the food we have before we buy one more food item for this house. Honestly, if we did that we probably would not set foot in a gro. store for almost 6months.
