I ran 11 miles today...well closer to 12. I'll say 11.5. I would know exactly except Dude (my Garmin) kept freaking out on me. He was fine for the first 4.5 miles. Then suddenly and without warning, there was this total eclipse of the su...

Oh wait, that's Little Shop of Horrors, isn't it?

No, suddenly he started ticking off the miles. Now I want to be fast, but a 1.02 minute mile? Yeah, not happening. I tried everything, resetting it, stopping and restarting it, etc. Finally I got mad and threw it in a ditch...that didn't help either. (Imagine!) I handed it to Roy and said "Here, put it in your pack. It's obviously not going to work."

About 5 minutes later he said "It's working for me. It says we've gone half a mile."

Really? That's odd. Okay, must have been the area we were in. I take it back and start running. "Dink!" Dude says to me.

Dink!? Dink!? I haven't gone another half mile! What are you TALKING about?

I look down and he's just clicking off the miles.

I give it back to Roy, calling Dude some names in the process and keep running. I decided it's stressing me out too much, so I'm just going to let it go.

A mile later Roy says "I don't know why, but it seems to be working for me." He hands it to me. Cool! I take it..."Dink!"

WTF?

I give it back...giving up. I told him I'd check it after Starbucks (we always stop in at Starbucks and then run home after a long run).

Then it dawned on me. At mile 4.35 I handed Roy my waist belt (fuel belt) because it was bothering my back. He I had to take my Shuffle out of it and hold it in my hand. So when we got to Sbux I said "Let me try something." I took Dude, held him next to Shuffle and they started arguing...he dink dink dinked away. I put Shuffle in the other hand, he stopped.

AHA!

Freaky.

Ended up with almost 12 miles. At least I do know the route and while I don't know exactly how far I ran, I know I did more than 11 because I ended up going back over a mile when Roy wasn't anywhere behind me (he'd gone in to pick up lunch as a surprise). He sometimes runs with me, but since he's not training for anything like a marathon or half right now, he's been riding his bike. (We will address how he rides his bike in another blog. He ran into me twice because "When I was a kid I didn't use my brakes. I just put my feet down." GRRRR!)

So alls well that ends well. Shuffle and Dude have filed for legal separation and they seem much happier that way. I wonder if he'd have the same issue with Flojo (my video iPod). I'll have to test that out.
