Tuesday, Jan 22 2008 - Running Again!
View MSTEECHUR's food & exercise for this day
Today was my first day back at "officially running". I ran by home and grabbed Dash, and then drove to Roy's school. Dropped the car off there and started in. I won't say I was speedy, and I certainly did some walking. But I was actually able to run.
I noticed a few things after five weeks off. First of all, it definitely hurt. I think I need something to stabilize my abdomen. The hematoma "pulls" on the areas where the teflon mesh is tacked. Those are actually the most painful areas. So I zipped my coat up tight and that helped to some extent.
Second of all, my muscles were definitely talking to me. I felt some ankle pain, although it would only happen a bit when I'd go from walking to running, and was not "bad" just "there". I also noticed my knees complaining a little bit. It is really fascinating how much fitness can be lost in five weeks! I know I'll get it back, so I just tell myself that it will take time and that's okay. My next marathon is scheduled for June 21, and while I was hoping to do one or two before then, I don't have to.
Emotionally I started out feeling a bit sad, even cried a little. It was just frustrating, at first, not to be able to just start running. Then I realized how silly it is to feel that way, and I slapped myself around a bit (mentally, lest the men in the white coats drag me away). Then I just felt like it was great to have a new challenge. I'd run a bit, and then just slow to a fast walk when I needed to. I listened to Christopher Moore's "A Dirty Job" (which is freaking HILARIOUS) and enjoyed a beautiful cold, clear day. I swear, I could see mountains on the other side of the world!
So I'm kind of excited! This is like a chance to start fresh and build up mileage slowly and intelligently. I can run/walk for awhile and just "enjoy" running without the pressure of training. (Although don't be surprised if I don't come up with something to train for within a few weeks. I mean come. We all know me, don't we?)
Finished five miles in 1:05. Not breaking any records, but hey! Five weeks ago at this time I was just waking up from major surgery!

I am so happy for you and congrats for completing five miles! I had surgery last week, not nearly the complications and difficulty that you had. During my first run, I kept repeating to myself "No Expectations, No Expectations, No Expectations" Like you, I decided to look at this as a new challenge as I build back up my endurance and core strength.
