Tuesday, Jan 19 2010 - Out of my environment . . .

View NEXUSNRG's food & exercise for this day

I work nights, late nights to be exact. Midnight shift so I'm not a daywalker. For the last 4 years I've consistently went to work from 11 PM until 7 AM, and I work for a Police Department. It's a desk job where I do have interaction with the public, but at that time of night not much interaction. Most of my interaction is with people being arrested and bonding companies.

So I'm fairly comfortable at work, I have a routine that works well for me, and it affords me very little physical activity. Walking from my car to my desk, and various movements inside the building, and then back to my car to go home again. I never have to walk up stairs. I haven't walked up a set of stairs in 4 years now.

Well today, I was summoned for Jury Duty at Circuit Court. The case was calling for a grand jury to hear a medical surgical malpractice suit. Anyhow at 8 AM I found myself out of my environment. And to top it off I had to walk up 2 flights of stairs. WOW!!! I really didn't know just how badly out of shape I was until I had to do that. I never EVER had been winded like that walking up stairs. I use to live in an apartment upstairs and even though my weight made it a task to climb I never was out of breath or finding myself having to stop from moving any further. I guess 4 years of doing nothing but sitting at a desk and sleeping has taken its toll!

I felt embarrassed when I got up to the top of those stairs, being surrounded by about 120 other candidates for jury duty watching this big white dude nearly gasping for air. I felt like passing out but that wasn't from the breathing, I think anxiety kicked in a bit too. Self-conscious much???? Maybe so, that's probably why I haven't set foot inside a mall in the past 10 years. When I was a kid, I was a MALL RAT! I was like "the" mall rat! But not any more. I avoid going to grocery stores, walmart, or any public retail stores period. I would of much rather been at home in bed instead of in this court house at 8 AM.

It only took me about 3 or 4 minutes for me to get my breathing under control, and back to normal, and believe it or not but about 3 hours after all of that exercise I felt pretty good. I know my heart and body was probably going WHAT THE HELL ARE YOU DOING!?!?!?!?!?!?!!! I just realized that I need to start getting more cardio in my daily routine some how. Being overweight is one thing, but being overweight and out of shape (cardio wise) is just plain embarrassing for me.

Oh anyhow I didn't get picked for this jury. I already served on a Grand Jury 3 months ago and one of the lawyers in this case also was in the other one and I'm sure that reason alone pretty much voided me from serving this time. So I'll go back to my normal routine until I can find motivation to more a little more and exercise.

Thanks for the comment Desirae... I enjoyed it too. I made a commitment to start doing this daily while at work now.

I love that you felt BETTER after attacking the stairs. It's a bit of a natural high and that is sometimes the only reason I make the effort.

No I don't mind at all, comment or add all you want, like you I enjoy the feedback. 5 years ago before I got this desk job I was very active at work and at play, and I use to walk at the track and was able to do a 15 min mile. I wouldn't even begin to guess how it would be like now. Climbing stairs had never been a problem for me before today.

I'm going to work on it... Sounds like you got a good formula going.

Hope it's ok that I added your blog as a favorite. I notice that you blog and I am trying to find more people that actually do this. I blog a lot and I like to sometimes have feedback. I think a blog is a great way to think look back on later when you acheive some goals.

Cardio can be rough, but if you just do a little bit here and there eventually you can do more! I used to get winded after just a few stairs and forget about trying to walk fast to keep up with anyone. I started just walking alot, and trying to walk quicker... then I worked up to some stairs. I just went a little in short bursts and then kept doing more. Now I am doing a lot better! Keep at it!

I manage the front desk and booking control. Meaning that when ever a citizen comes to the police department, I'm the first person they have contact with. I'm the person everyone has to go through in the arrest/release process. I maintain all of the warrants and basically do anything on the computer that needs to be done. Dispatch is in another building. I'll go to work and sit at a desk for 8 hours, entering in arrestee's information, getting mug shots, handling paperwork, and dealing with the public that walks in. Some times I'll have to leave my area to go get something but for the most part I stay confined to a 30x20 room with office equipment/file cabinets/computers.

There is a set of stairs in the lobby leading to the second floor, and I've been daring myself to start walking up them. I guess I'll need to do that soon. I can walk up and then down that flight of stairs once a night, and then maybe eventually do it twice a night until I build up some cardio. Other than that I have no need for the stairs in my life. Everything I do and every place I go to is on the 1st floor.

I'm sure I'll be blogging about that eventually.

One of my first commitments to myself was giving up elevators. My office is on a third floor and I also do some freelance work at my local community college. It kicked my ass for the first two weeks. Luckily no one at my office building takes the stairs so I could take my sweet time and not worry about what other people were seeing. The community college is a little different as students tend to take the stairs as the elevator is slow. It was hard at first because everyone was passing me like I was a slow driver on the Autobahn.

3 weeks later it's a little easier.

Not much easier. But still easier. It's a good wake up call for you and hopefully you'll get motivated to do something more for yourself. Are you a dispatcher? I work as a Video Interpreter so I basically sit around in front of a camera and place calls between hearing and deaf people. There is no physical activity whatsoever. Sometimes I go up and down the stairs during my breaks just to get stuff moving around. Now that I've been on the treadmill for a few weeks I can actually feel myself craving to get on get moving!
