Wednesday, Jan 20 2010 - Challenging myself. . .
View NEXUSNRG's food & exercise for this day
Last night after some discussion on my other blogs, and giving it more thought I decided to make the effort to start climbing stairs at work. There is a flight of stairs where I work which I have absolutely no reason to climb. I don't have any dealings on the 2nd floor so I never bothered going up there.
Well this morning as soon as I logged out I decided to climb those stairs before going home. So I did. I climbed them and then walked around the hallway which makes a loop and then walked back down the stairs and continued out the building to my car.
My goal as of today is to climb those stairs once each day after getting off work for the remainder of the work week which is 4 days, so a total of 5 days I would have walked up and down those stairs. Then starting next week I'm going to set a goal to climb those stairs twice each shift. I might space it apart but at least doing it twice a night for a week. After gauging how I'm handling that I may maintain that pace for a bit or increase to three times a night.
I've been daring myself for months and months now to do at least that little bit, and never did. So here is just another thing I'm changing. Baby steps for me right now. The important thing which I know works well is to set a small goal, and achieve it before doing anything else. None of this is about losing weight or reducing calorie count. It's all about building up to some kind of meaningful cardio workout in the future.

Well the cat might if it's a Cheshire... lol.
I use to have a pedometer a few years ago, but I'm pretty sure I tossed it along with a lot of other junk when I broke up with my girlfriend. Back-story, she got it for me, and motivated me to use it in an effort to lose weight and when the relationship crashed and burned I pretty much destroyed or threw out anything that had any connection with her.
Ever since I joined CK I've been interested in logging my daily steps so I could at least put that in as incidental exercise, and seeing that number will surely motivate to increase it. Right now I have no way of measurement so I can't log it. I like the idea of having one that sits in your pocket rather than clipped on the side.
Thanks for the comment, they're always welcomed and encouraged, there's no such thing is a late entry to me because your perspective on things will always renew my outlook.

Good for you! (I know I'm commenting on your entries all late but you've sucked me into your story now).
:teeth1: ) but I also realize I almost never move anymore working from home... anyway, it's the Omron HJ-303 GoSmart Tri-Axis Pocket Pedometer and you can just slip it in your pocket (or clip it on to your pants, whatever). $30 on amazon, hoping it'll get me moving a little more. Just thought I'd mention in case you might also find it motivating (too bad they don't have one that specifically measures stairs!)
In looking for other ways to measure progress, I just bought a pedometer - I'm all self conscious about walking around with this (which is STUPID cuz I work from HOME and who's going to laugh at me? my cat?
Best of luck with the stairs, BTW!

I'm really MOTIVATED BY THIS! I had originally planned to not do any exercising until I took off at least another 30 lbs, and for the most part I'll probably maintain that, but I will incorporate the climbing a set of stairs once a night at work, and increase it by one the next week, and so on. Sorta like a warming up phase to getting my body conditioned to hit the track and begin 1mi/2mi walks.
:)
Right now I've lost 7 lbs in 1 week. I might only lose 3 or 4 in the next week because I'm increasing my calorie intake closer to my recommended number, but that's ok, as long as I maintain consistent loss per week is fine with me.
Thanks for the comments you two!

This is FANTASTIC!!! Our goals have to be small so they are achievable and this is literally a STEP IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION!

that is a great idea and an inspiration to me. I have stairs at home and have to go up them to get to bed. But one more trip a day on them should help. Thanks Judy
