Tuesday, Jan 26 2010 - Finding hope out of destruction. . .
View NEXUSNRG's food & exercise for this day
At one time I was very depressed because this really bad storm, I'm sure you've heard of called Katrina came here and totally destroyed just about everything. It's funny how a lifestyle change can some times motivate your thinking, or is it the other way around? Hmmm? Well anyhow this use to be my favorite McDonald's and right beside it was a Wendy's, although you wouldn't know that because the Wendy's is nothing but a slab in this picture. A lot of the places that I use to eat at were completely destroyed and I missed them so. But here lately, the more I psyche myself up for this challenge, the more I find myself pondering where all of the desire to eat there went? I no longer seem to care that those places are long gone. I'm even feeling that if they were still there I wouldn't miss them now. I use to go to Sonic on the beach all the time, 5 days a week and get a Route 44 (44oz) Orange slush and chili-cheese coney. Can you imagine how many calories and sugar is in that? I shutter to think.
So for the past month or so I've been growing more weary of my weight, and contemplating the loss thereof, and on the 13th of January 2010 I just decided to finally try 'something.' I don't know if I have Subway or Jarrod Fogle to thank or not. After finding CK I stopped doing his 'subway diet' and started adding different foods. I still eat a sub when I can but not because I'm trying to lose weight but because it tastes so good, and fills me up, and best of all its low cal. However, his story did motivate me to make that first big step. Now I'm taking more steps, steps to my goal. I reached one goal this week, on 1/25/10 I set a goal of 415 and met it, then I added a new goal of 411 by the 1st of Feb, but I changed it to an even 410.
This morning I woke up and weighed myself and I went from 415 yesterday to 413 this morning. So I lost 2 Lbs since yesterday. I was a bit more active yesterday too so that might have something to do with it. I want to be down to 400 by the 13th of Feb which is one month from the time I began this, and it looks as if I'll make that goal.
Katrina may have destroyed a lot of my favorite places, but now I weep no more, no more. The sea has washed them away, as if washing away my desire to consume their evilness. Hail to the vanquisher of the super-size... Hail Spurlock, Hail Spurlock, Hail Spurlock!
EDIT EDIT EDIT: 1:50 PM
I was getting hungry while posting this entry, as I hadn't eaten yet, and I so wanted a burger. I got dressed and went back down to the grocery store, and I bought some 95% Extra Lean ground sirloin beef, then I picked up some light mayonnaise, and some fat-free kraft cheese singles. Came home and made an awesome burger. I took 4 oz of beef and mixed in 1 teaspoon of Lipton's onion soup mix, then threw it on the griddle. I fried 7 frozen large steak fries. I put the fat-free cheese, and a swirt of ketchup, and light mayo on it, and some more ketchup for the fries, and the total meal was only 538 Calories. I'm fat, and happy... weird.

Great post, very inspirational!!
I have a special link to the New Orleans area, lived in Houma for about 4 years, then 1 year in New Orleans (Harahan). The scars of Katrina may never heal the town I shortly called home (and still one of my favorite places on earth), but it sure is AWESOME to see your Saints in the BIG GAME!
Looking forward to your continued progress. Keep up the great work!

There is something poignant in the photograph of the devastated McDonald's and also your rebirth as a person who is eating better and taking care of himself. Kind of like a fast food phoenix.

Whoo hoo for loose pants!!! It's my favorite thing! Ok, expensive to buy new pants though. This is what I do, you might want to consider it. I know the rest of my pants usually looked a little puckery but what I did is take them to a alterations person ('cause I cannot sew) and I had them take in the waist. I think they called it a dart or something. Just tell them you want the waist tighter and as long as the crazy seam is covered by your shirt who cares! I think for like 2 pairs of pants it cost me $7 bux which is a whole lot different then the 75/150 that I usually spend on a piar of plus size designer jeans.
I love that picture. Though the loss of the area was devistating the picture is great. Think of it as a motivator, like you've obliterated Mickey D's from out of your life. It's trashed and you are the victor!

I thank you for the efforts you made here, all of the volunteers were wonderful. Some are still here rebuilding but it's not as intense as it was a year ago. There's still a lot of devastation here, some places have yet to be cleared. It's going to take some time, but things are starting to be re-built just not quick enough.
It sucked living through it, but we were more lucky than a lot of other people so I don't complain much about it. I only complain when New Orleans gets the exposure. I'm real happy for the loss. 4 years ago I was 385, and then in a year or so I went up to 450+ and it's been there for nearly 4 years now, so 413 is the lowest I've been in 4 years. I'm just happy to be going in the right direction.
Tonight I ate a home made stuffed bell pepper with 95% lean beef, rice, onions, tomato sauce with a little honey, and omg it was so good, I'm so stuffed too, and the whole thing along with broiled veggies (asparagus, yellow bell peppers, onions, and broccoli) was right at 375 calories. Doing good making good choices is the key.

413!!!!!
Fantastic!!!
I was in Bay St. Louis a year after Katrina with Habitat building houses and there was still so much damage it was as if nothing had been done to clean up all the mess. I can't imagine what that was like to live through.
On a happier note : DUDE, 413!!!!!!

Thanks for the great comments. I feed off of them (no pun).
I'm trying to come up with stuff to write about but some times it gets a little hard to come up with something. Your comments give me motivation to keep going though. I love Morgan Spurlock, and that's unusual because I'm not big on people like him and Michael Moore. Sorry if I offend but I can't stand liberals. But something about the way Spurlock presents his content or propaganda (which ever way you view it) is fascinating and interesting to me. I loved super-size me. I recommend anyone who hasn't seen it watch it. It'll give you an entirely new outlook on fast food.
I absolutely love the turkey sub. I was eating it way before the 7 for 6 campaign. I eat mine with their wheat bread, 6 inches, no extra meat or cheese. I do put american cheese on it, and load it down with lettuce, onion, bell pepper, olives, cucumbers, tomatoes, and their honey mustard. That sandwich alone will keep me full for 5 to 6 hours easily.
My pants are already starting to become more loose fitting. I have one pair, even with the tightest notch in my belt are now starting to slip past my hips and I have to constantly pull them back up for the (past 2 days now). This is where things get complicated. I'll be wearing pants too loose for me, but I won't want to spend 50 dollars for a new pair that are only 2 sizes smaller, and only to have those become too loose to wear either. Losing weight is expensive!

Jimmy - I love reading your blogs. You have such an amazing outlook on things. I am happy you are doing so well with losing and I am postive you will reach all of your goals.
I love Subway... I am a big fan of their Turkey sub... I have it saved with and without apples in my diary. ;-)

Your writing is very insightful. I echo the sentiment, "Hail Spurlock!" You've come very far in a short amount of time. Way to go!
