Thursday, Jan 28 2010 - My Momma says. . .
View NEXUSNRG's food & exercise for this day
My Momma says Paula Dean is da devil! Well not really, but when I watch her on TV I start to think of the movie The Water boy, probably one of my favorite Adam Sandler movies. Well for several years now I've been an avid Food Network (Food Channel) watcher. Love watching Iron Chef, and Iron Chef America. Also love watching Guy's bites, and Diners Drive-in's and Dives. Another one of my favorite shows is Dinner Impossible. Well along with these I enjoy watching Paula Dean on Paula's home cooking. She has a very approachable way about herself and the foods she makes looks soooooo good. Well here is where things take a different path.
I've been doing CK now for about 2 weeks, incidentally I graduated Bronze and I'm now Silver as of today. So I've been doing this thing for a couple of weeks, and religiously tracking my calories and making changes to my foods to meet the target, and in doing so I've eliminated a lot of junk foods and bad fatty foods from my diet cold-turkey. Well today, this afternoon while I was channel surfing I flipped to the Food Network and Paula Dean was on. I was thinking, "oh, cool Paula is on. Let's watch!" Well she was in the middle of making crepe filled with a chocolate like pudding and slices of bananas. She folded the crepe over and then topped two filled crepes with home made whipped topping, and then sprinkled with powder sugar and a drizzle of chocolate syrup on the top.
Then She made a big ole Georgia grin on her face and took a big ole bite of that filled crepe and began to talk about how good it was. Noting how much better it was than the one she had in Paris. Something happened at that moment.
Strangely I started to see Paula in a whole new light; One I've never envisioned before. PAULA IS DA DEVIL! OMG! PAULA DEAN IS DA DEVIL! She's making food which has gobbs of butter, sugar, and anything else you can think of to make it tasty, yet bad for you. I almost found myself disgusted watching her eat that crepe on TV, and I never ever experienced a feeling like that watching her before.
It was as if a cloak had been lifted from my eyes, and I could see the true nature of Paula Dean. I began to envision a set of horns sprouting from her forehead with a long thick red tail waving behind her, with a mythical evil laugh that use to be sweet and inviting, which now scares me. I don't think I'll be able to ever watch her show again.

It's better, I'm going into work tonight and then I have 2 days off. Hopefully I won't have to be on it too much tonight but I'll be fine. Just been relaxing and keeping off of it as much as possible.

OMG.. I love the Waterboy. That has to be one of my fave movies...lol
His old movies are the best.
Food Network does have some great shows. Iron Chef and Dinner Impossible are both fun shows to watch. I like The Next Food Network Star also.
How is your foot today?

But if Paula did that, then it wouldn't really be Paula Dean. She's fine just the way she is I think. But watching her show and see the things she's making wouldn't work well with me nowadays. Sadly because I could easily eat everything she cooks.
In case you didn't know I live in South Mississippi, right on the Gulf Coast. Her style of cooking is mostly what I encounter at parties and events.

I am a southern woman and I use to cook fried foods and bake, but I am learning betters ways to cook. I like Paula Dean and she has great recipes; but they are very fattening for sure. A friend of mine that lives in NY once ask me if all southerns ate like her taking those nites and using so much butter and sugar and I said "NO", not all of us do. Paula Dean seems to be a godd person, good cook and funny, but I wish she would make some of her dishes healthier.

No I haven't really seen that show. I usually sleep during the day, and work nights so there are several shows I miss. Some times I catch the ones I mentioned on re-run. I can't believe I misspelled her last name. Dean, not Deen.
Another show I like to watch, but isn't on Food Network, is Ramsey's Kitchen Nightmares, and Hell's Kitchen.

I
 the Food Network. Have you been watching the Worse Cooks in America? Its almost over but it's been pretty hilarious.
:devious:
For a long time I couldn't watch Paula Dean or Ina Garten because they both cook with massive amounts of butter and sugar. Now I pick and choose which episodes I watch because I HAVE made some good receipes of theirs but I typically give them what I call the *Patti Twist* and lighten them up.
Recently I made a Rack of Lamb, Ina's receipe and it didn't even need to be twisted.

If you're hungry it's a bad idea to be parking the TV on that channel, but otherwise you really do learn a lot about food, how food works with the body, and cooking. Learn new and exciting recipes, and of course the shows where they do challenges are quite entertaining. But yeah I could see where someone with an eating disorder or one who doesn't have control over their eating would not benefit from always watching cooking shows.

:laugh5: you are too funny. I've no idea who Paula Deen is (I'm so very pop-culture-void, I know), but you just went from making me really hungry to ewww, gross! I just can't imagine food tv can possibly be good for one's diet.

LOL Peanut.... My Mom never told me anything. It's a line from a movie.. "My momma says girls are da devil!!!!" OMG You don't know about Food Network? Scary??? HEAVENS NO! Food Network is awesome. Its probably one of the best channels on Cable and Satellite. You must not have cable or watch much TV because I just assumed everyone knew about Food Network. There are some really, really great shows on there.
I was really being more tongue-in-cheek with that blog. I don't think Paula Deen is the devil, and she's really a great person, I'd love to meet her but after forcing myself to cut all sweets out of my life (for now at least) I just became disgusted by what she was preparing on TV.

I love PD too. Not so much for the food she is cooking but I like to watch her and think about when she got hit in the face with a Christmas Ham.
My MIL is very much like PD in her style of cooking. Very southern. Lots of gravies, butter, flour and what ever else she can fit into a casserole dish. Some days I go over there and just watching her makes my arteries cringe. Damn those Southern women!
YAY SILVER!!!!!!

I didn't know who Paula Deen was and then I looked her up on the net. The food network looks kind of scary to me. But glad you now agree with your mom. Take care. You are doing great.
