View NEXUSNRG's food & exercise for this day
Today after work Brandon and I went to the Planet Fitness.
Started our work out at 07:45 Hours and ended at 08:45 Hours for a total of 1.0 hours total. First we went to the bench press, today I noticed that I'm starting to get a little more stronger with the weights. The first time I went I could barely lift the 45 lb bar by itself, and 2.5 lb weights made it a real challenge. Slowly I built up, and today for the first time I pressed 3 reps of 20 lbs each side on the bar. It was very hard but I got them up. After several minutes of working up to that much weight we moved on to the dumbbells.
Did several minutes of curls, and then several one arm extensions, then shoulder presses. After that we went off to the dreaded treadmill. Mine was the "LifeFitness 9500HR." I started off with a Fitness Test on a speed of 3.0 for 5 minutes. This about killed me. I was sucking wind seriously bad. It Inclined at a level 5 after the first minute. I didn't get a chance to see my HR but it said my results were "very poor - 22" I don't know what the number means however Brandon's was above average 45.
After the 5 minutes was complete I walked for a about 5 minutes at 1.9 to catch my breath and get it under control. Then I steadily built the speed up. I was finally walking at a pace of 2.5 and a 1.1 incline with a HR anywhere between 147-150. I remained at this for 16 minutes, then he wanted me to kick it up for 2 minutes at speed 3.1. Did that and my HR shot up to around 170. After the two minutes I throttled back using the cool down phase and stayed on another 6 minutes for a total of 25 minutes, plus the 5 min fitness test for a total time of 30 minutes on the damn thing.
I'm starting to realize that it's not that I hate the treadmill, its that I hate having a difficult time keeping my breathing under control. When I finally get to where I can sustain a good pace with complete control over my breathing I know the rest will fall into place. I'll be able to walk on the thing way more than 30 minutes. Within the first 5 minutes I was ready to get off, I was telling myself that I would go to 10 minutes and just quit. But I knew that would disappoint Brandon. So I sucked it up and just kept going. My biggest obstacle is inside me. I need to find a way to dominate it before it dominates me any further because right now it's the only thing that keeps telling me to just quit, to just not do it, to just make an excuse not to go to the gym.
He's already made plans for us to go back in the morning after work. A new experience, two days in a row. We'll see how that goes. I'm already dreading it.
20 minutes after working out, at home I took my vitals.
123/78 with a pulse of 101. My normal is around 109-110/68-69 with a pulse of 66-79.

Doing great, Jimmy. This may sound odd, but as soon as you know you can do it, you'll be able to do it.
I didn't run until my early 20s. I had a really hard time getting going and would stop in the first 5 minutes because my HR was high and my breathing was really difficult. One day, I just pushed myself to see what was beyond 5 minutes and realized that after that point, my breathing stabilized and I was able to keep going for first 20 minutes, then 25, then 45 and an hour.
When I start a run today, I still remember that first run and going past the 5 minute point. Now I just sort of ignore the part where my body says, "No, bad idea" and once I push past it I'm in that great zone where you know you're strong and under your own power.
By reading your post, it's obvious you've got a lot of tenacity and the right mindset to push past that point too. Keep a log of your workouts and then compare today's workout to those you're doing in 2 weeks. You'll be blasting over this rough spot in no time.

And you know the thing is I know this already but my mind still keeps resisting and not wanting to do it. Make excuses and what not. But I know if I just keep doing it on a regular basis my body will get use to it and it'll become easier over time. ugh!

The more you do it, the more your body gets used to it! I started out my walks slow and now I will easily walk 3 miles in an hour. I still have slight trouble talking up a storm when I do that. It's all good... I'm working my heart!
Heart is loving you!!!

It is SO hard at first, oh, my goodness!!!
:sad3:The first time I was put on an elliptical, I was given four minutes. When I got off, I staggered, I was so tired and dizzy.
:drunk: Persistence is the key and you've got it!!!

Thanks Bea! It's certainly the biggest challenge in my life right now. It's one I can handle too, but still certainly a challenge.
:( But I have hope that one day I'll cross over that line where exercise is a craving and not a dreaded thing. I'm too use to being lazy.
Tara, I know I was kind of surprised that I started adding more weight to the bar so soon. I mean so far it's been a struggle to get that bar off my chest to full extension.
Sheetal, at least I know I'm not the only one. My sister loves the treadmill it seems. Hope when I get use to walking distances at a constant speed my view of it will change.
Debbie, so far lifting weights and the bench is my favorite thing at the gym, but there are other things there I haven't tried yet, so who knows what else I might like? I seriously need to build my upper body strength for sure.
Aaron to tell you the truth I never expected to do that long, I guess once I got into the zone things started clicking a long but for right now it's always rough starting out of the gate.
Maura I have those days, and in fact I have been letting them defeat me. I end up talking myself out of going or coming up with some kind of excuse, and then another day to improve is lost.

Jimmy,
You are one tenacious dude!! I know you can dominate that treadmill and anything else you chose to do.
I know this to be true!!

You just started going to the gym and already getting stronger. This is it Jimmy! This is the start of a new chapter. Your body is going to crave the exercise. The numbers will continue to be important but getting stronger is going to be a huge motivator.
I don't care what you say but someday we're crossing a finish line together!

There's a reason it's called the dreadmill! I hate it too. I would much run in a typhoon than on that contraption.
Congrats on making it to the gym and having a successful session. And the bench press is an amazing exercise. I always feel so strong when I do them. Until the last time when My trainer kept pushing down on the bar (grrrrr!)

WTG Jimmy! Sounds like you had a great work out.
I love doing the bench press when I do weights.

That is great that you were able to do 30 minutes, especially since you wanted to quit at 5 minutes! Just keep moving and eventually you will look forward to the time on the treadmill.

Jimmy, this is terrific! The first steps are ALWAYS the hardest. There have been days (and there still are) when I DO NOT want to go to the gym. I tell myself to just do 15 minutes and then I have permission to leave. And, of course, I end up staying a lot longer b/c my HRM tells me I've burned x amount and if I do just a little longer I can hit y amount. Most of the time it is mental. You WILL dominate it.
