In my everlasting quest to tweak my calorie intake I am trying something new. I like finding new things that are created in the name of losing weight, then giving it an honest try. Last night while surfing around I stumbled across an article about boca burgers. I've heard of them, and I knew they were made with soy, but never really considered them until finding the information on it last night.
So I went to boca's website and discovered that their burger is only 100 calories with only 1g of fat and no sat/trans fats, high in protein and low in sodium. So this morning after work I drove over to Rouse's and found their selection of Boca and Morning Star products. I picked the regular burger to see what it would be like. I also picked up some fresh Atlantic Sockeye Salmon which I will grill outside either tonight or tomorrow. My motivation for trying out the soy burgers were because my wishes are to reduce red meat to only once, maybe twice a week at the most. The rest of the time I want to focus on fish, poultry, vegetables, and other things.
Today for lunch I had a boca. First impressions are not bad. I didn't have a problem with the taste so that was a very good sign, and the most important thing is it filled me up. I ate around 2 PM and it's now 7 PM and I'm still not hungry. I was planning on eating dinner around 7 PM but I don't think that will happen now because I'm not forcing myself to eat by a schedule. My diary will most likely change around some because I already pre-planned my meals for today.
Here is a break down of my lunch calorie wise.
Boca Pattie = 100 calories
Sara Lee Delightful Wheat burger bun = 80 calories
Borden Fat-free american sliced cheese = 30 calories
Kraft real (olive oil) Mayo (squirt) = 45 calories
I didn't count the one leaf of lettuce or one strip of onion
5 Ore-Ida thick-cut steak fries (oven baked) = 120 calories for 7
2 1/2 tablespoons of Heinz ketchup for fries = 38 calories
1 20 oz bottle of water = nothing
total calories: 401 with 8g fat, 52g carbs.
I was impressed that 400 calories filled me up, and continue to do so 5 hours later. So I'm going to add boca burgers to my arsenal of food items to draw from when ever I have an urge for a burger but don't want to go over my imaginary red-meat limit for the week. They have other things too like chicken, I'll eventually get around to trying as well.
I'm having one of those ugh days. Today my weight spiked back up to 370, like overnight. There is no way that's fat weight. I guess this means that Monday's weigh in will be low to none. It's normal for me to have a large weight loss and then watch it spike back up over the middle of the week only to leave me at the same weight the following week. I have to remind myself that I won't see 2 lbs loss EVERY MONDAY! I have to wait for the entire month to see that I've been losing 2 lbs a week. It's weird to me that it works like that but as long as I see my monthly avg remain around 7 1/2 lbs then I'm good to go.

Jimmy, I've just read your recent blog entries and am in awe of your commitment, achievements, and most of all, your attitude. You are really making the changes!!!
I am in a rut with my food choices, which I think probably sets me up for disaster when I get to maintenance (a long long time from now). Your enjoyment of the Boca Burgers and everyone else's suggestions have inspired me to go buy one of these things myself.*gulp* This is scary territory for me! :-)

mine does the exact same thing...
weigh-in on monday's and usually tuesday it'll be lower, and then it'll spike back up and go back down and up and some times stay up like it's doing now and then go back down. I'm not worried I know what it's doing.
I get on the scale 3 or 4 times a day just to see what it's doing but I never let the number get to me like it use to. I shrug it off and just continue on with my day now.

I like the Boca Burgers just fine! Also, I weigh myself every day because if I weighed myself once a week I'd miss the days of "new lows" on the scale. My weigh in day is Mondays, but on Tuesday is when my loss shows up. But for the rest of the week it fluctuates up and down until I finally see the "new low" on the following Monday. So what I'm trying to say is, Tuesdays weigh in is a preview of things to come. I hope that all made sense.

Deb of course everyone's taste in foods are going to be different, I might like it but you hate it. I'm sure there are some things you love to eat that I wouldn't like. It was an easy sale for me because my family on my Dad's side were cotton and soybean farmers in Arkansas. And growing up when ever we took trips I use to run out into the field and would hand pick and eat soybeans right there.
I certainly say give it a try, if you're looking for something to imitate a burger on a bun with fewer calories I'd go for that. Of course a 93/7% extra lean 4oz pattie of ground beef is just only 60 calories more. I guess it's just what ever you're in the mood for.
Natalie, Leslie and K... Thanks for the vote of confidence in MSF. Next time I'm at the grocery store I'm going to pick something up from them and try it. It might be chicken or another type of burger. I didn't see any bratwurst sausage so I'll check again. I like bratwurst grilled on the bbq and put on a hotdog bun. yum!
Bea hit on a rather sore spot for me. Sodium intake. I'm getting pissed off with food right now because I can't seem to eat anything without going well over 2500mg of sodium in a day. On average it's over 3200mg and I see daily spikes well over 4000mg.
I guess I need to just drink more water, lately I'm pushing it to get 8 glasses a day. I need to go over that to help flush out all of this crap. Feeling aggravated over the spiked weight gain during this week.

I can vouch for the Morningstar Farms burgers, too (and pretty much everything else they make). Instead of using ground beef in our tacos, we now get the spicy black bean burgers and use those as-is. No need to crumble and season in the salty (and omgsogood) packet of taco seasoning. I don't know if they still make them, but MSF used to make a veggie bratwurst-like sausage that grilled up nicely.

I like boca, but I love morningstar farms better. I like the texture and flavor much more. They have a sun dried tomato basil that is out of this world!!! Also their veggie sausage (patties, not logs) are my favorite!

I have been going back and forth on the boca burgers. I never really had any feed back on them. Maybe since you didn't think they were bad I will give it a shot. I have tried a veggie patty that Morning star has out, but it's been awhile since I had them.
I also love when I find a meal that is around 400 calories that fills me up.

I'm interested in trying morning star products too, simply because it's something new and don't know if I might like one over the other. I'm happy that the boca brand agreed with my taste buds. I'm probably going to have another one today for lunch too heh..
Kat, I know, it's a never ending cycle we lead. But I'm not complaining. I went from eating well over 3000 calories a day without even knowing it to learning to pick low-fat or sugar-free or reduced sugar products. Every calorie I can cut from every item I eat gives me that much more I can eat to stay satisfied.
Ross I can't imagine going to a bbq and only eating a salad, its good to see you two discovered them as well. And that gives me an idea, I wonder how the boca's taste out on the pit with some sauce on them? hmmmm gonna have to try that next time we grill outside.

I've tried both the Boca and Morningstar burgers. I like them both. Which reminds me, I have a Spicy Black bean burger in the freezer I need to use up. Morningstar has some imitation chicken nuggets I need to try as well.

My mother and I discovered boca burgers on our last attempt to conquer our weight. They are amazing (and all that fiber does fill you up!). I was more impressed with the garden veg or black bean, they seem to have a better taste/texture for me. Now that I'm vegetarian they serve a great purpose...I'm not eating a salad at every barbecue we have!

no I don't mind it, but the sad thing is I'm already aware of that, and even more sad is I'm not prepared to give up any of those things yet. I'm almost sure that is where the spikes and stalling comes from too.

Hi,
Just an unsolicited comment: your dietary changes are awesome with the vegies and lean protein, but you have to lower the sodium because I think that is where the weight spikes. Condiments and deli meats are notorious for high sodium content.
Hope you don't mind the comment!
