Wednesday, Aug 11 2010 - O-M-G! I SEE STARS!!!
View NEXUSNRG's food & exercise for this day
So here it is, today is the day a whole new chapter in my life begins. It wasn't an easy task coming to this point and it certainly came a lot sooner than I had wanted or expected, but nevertheless it's here, it's happened, and I have to own it NOW!
This morning after work Brock, a co-worker (police officer/swat team member) was out behind the department parking lot at our exercise track along with other members of SWAT working out, doing chin-ups, push-ups, sit-ups, and jogging around the track. I on the other hand was walking out to my car to go home for the day as my shift had just ended. As I drove away staring at them and Brock waved to me and I yelled, "What's up!?" He said, "Come join us!" as I slowly pulled away I said, "That's okay I'm not prepared, give me a heads up next time," and so I drove away with that; feeling bitter and angry with myself, angry that I let an opportunity to bond and work out slip through my fingers. Angry that I let my fear and weakness take control over my true wishes.
Deep down inside I knew that I needed to start exercising; true I have been losing weight whilst living a sedentary lifestyle, but the pounds have been coming off slower and slower these past couple of months and I haven't found energy yet. This nagging voice in the back of my head would pop up every time I found a burst of energy and had nothing to use it on. That voice would say, "If only you had a gym membership you could go there right now and work out." So after feeling upset with myself this morning on the way home I suddenly found myself turning into the parking lot of Planet Fitness (formerly World's Gym). I sat there in the parking lot for about 10 minutes contemplating if I was really actually ready to do this. Because once I would committed I wouldn't allow myself to turn back, and knew I would be in for rough days ahead.
A short facebook post from my blackberry stating that I was sitting in front of the gym contemplating whether I should just do it, or find another excuse to hold off was made. I quickly had some replies encouraging me but by then I had already hopped out of the car and walked inside. So I spoke with the lady there and we went over everything and I signed the forms, gave her my card and paid. Within a few minutes I was on a Lifefitness 2000 treadmill walking. I walked for 35 min varying the incline from 0 to 4 and the speed from 1.8 to 3.0, HRM said I burned 279 calories and I walked 2.1 Miles.
After that I went and got some water and moved to the weights and being working my arms and after 15 minutes of that I went to a Life fitness Cycle and rode the bike for 15 minutes and burned 260 calories. By this time my mouth was so dry and since I didn't come prepared (being very spur of the moment) I decided an hour in there was good and came home.
I've signed my name, they have my money, now comes the hard part, which is finding my commitment every day to go. So right now the immediate plan is to go 5 days a week (my work days) right after work, and spend at least 1 hour in there doing pretty much the same routine and track my progress to see how long it takes to improve over each machine. And in a couple of months I'll see how my stamina and energy levels are. These are my baby steps and now is the time to put away the sedentary lifestyle.

YOU CAN DO THIS!
:)
Some days are better than others for me yet I always tell myself 30 minutes minimum. 30 minutes of something and one day of hard cardio. Sometimes my 30 minutes is just dancing with my kids!

GOOD FOR YOU!!!! I find gyms to be very intimidating, and I'm more self conscious in them than I am anywhere else. I'm not sure why, since everyone is always nice to me, but I understand how it can be difficult to go. Well, that on top of being motivated to actually work out! We're all very proud of you for taking this big step!!! Don't you just feel sooooooo good about yourself after you're finished your workout?? Keep that in mind when you need motivation

I wanna thank everyone for all of your great comments, love them love them love them... And Tara I'll look forward to that day. I don't know what the future has in store for me, and I don't have ambitions of being a gym rat, but I do know I'm going to get my money's worth out of the membership.

JIMMY!!!!!!
You did it! And these are NOT baby steps by any means. It's so intimidating joining a gym. You may not become a gym rat (not that I would know anything about that lol) and go everyday but you now have the opportunity to take control of your life even more than just with making good food choices.
Dude, you lift those weights and the day we meet for that emotional hug, you can squeeze the life out of me!!!!
Dammit, I need a freakin tissue up in here!!!!!

Hiya Sharon! Welcome to my blog and thanks for the encouragement.
Leslie I'd be just like that too, if I drive home FORGET IT. I'll end up getting undressed and climb into bed and by the time I wake up I wouldn't want to go anywhere or do anything just so I could make it through the night at work. So the absolute best time to go is right after work on the way home and it works out that this place is right on my way home.
Aaron I trust you're right, knowing me though my body might freak out and start to hold on to water or something crazy trying to mess with my head on the scale, but don't worry I'm mentally strong enough to get through that. The biggest issue for me was finally making that choice to just do it.
Natalie I plan on doing just that. I'll be packing a t-shirt to wear and most nights I'm already wearing sweat pants to work because my dress code is very relaxed. I'm hoping it will become second nature/habit for me because the most logical time is right after work before I go to bed at 8am.
Debs I already felt pretty good this morning, so I'm ready to go again. It'll be a little easier for me now not having to rely on a friend's schedule to just go to the gym with him. I can go at my will. I'll look at getting a HRM because I want accurate measurements. For now I'll just have to go by what's on the machine. What model do you use?

That is awesome! You are going to love how you feel after working out. I change at work and go right to the gym! If I do that I can't talk myself out of it since I am already for the workout. If you don't have a HRM, you should look into them. It will help with tracking your calories etc.. Sometimes the machines play games with us.
:) I love my HRM, it help keeps me on track too. If my heart rate is dropping then I know I need to kick it up a notch etc... Just some food for thought!
Congrats again on making a great first step!

Do what I do ... I don't give myself a choice. I go to work dressed for the gym and pack my work clothes, that way I HAVE to go, because spending the day in an office in workout gear would be frowned upon.
So if you are going after work, make yourself go there before you do anything else. Soon enough it will become a habit.

It really helps me to go right after work. I literally eat a snack before I leave work and then have all my stuff in the car ready to go and I hit it right after. If I go home first I make excuses! Good for you Jimmy, joining the gym has really helped me. Walking is so good for everyone!!!
