Recently I had been craving pizza because I've virtually been 'real pizza free' for nearly 6 months straight. But I'm not ready to delve into Papa John's or Pizza Hut just yet. So I started doing some looking around for the lowest calorie pizza I could come up. Nothing was panning out until I tried using a pita loaf for the crust and was pleasantly surprised with the results of my experiment; which I will now share with all of you.
The pizza described is
227 total calories, Fat 0.7g, Saturated Fat 0.1g, Carbohydrates 39g, Sugar 6g, Protein 15g, Fiber 5g, Cholesterol 5mg, Sodium 745mg, Calcium 265mg. Even with it's small size and low calories it's still filling and tastes pretty good.
Ingredients used:
One 6" whole wheat pita loaf (not a pocket): 150 calories
1/8th cup of Hunt's Tomato Sauce (Herb/Basil/Oregano): 8 calories (15 for 1/4c)
1/4 cup of Kraft Shredded Fat-Free Mozzarella cheese: 45 calories
1/2 cup of sliced green bell peppers: 9 calories
1/2 cup of sliced white onions: 4 calories
4 thin slices of Roma Tomato: 11 calories
2 fresh basil leaves, diced (straight from our garden): no calories
1 sprinkle of Nu-Salt (Salt substitute): no sodium, no calories
1 sprinkle of Mrs. Dash Tomato, Herb, Basil seasoning: no sodium, no calories
Non-stick cooking spray brushed on both sides: no calories
Here are two pictures of the ingredients used to make my personal pizza:
Spreading the tomato sauce with the nu-salt sprinkled over it:
Adding the toppings, any veggies of your choice will do:
The most important thing here, CHEESE!!! 1/4 cup is more than enough for this size.
Stick it in the oven on 425 degrees for about 15-20 minutes depending on how crunchy you want the crust to be, and this will be the result of your effort.
== EDIT EDIT EDIT ==
A day after posting this Joseph's Whole Wheat Pita loaves were found in Walmart and I tried these instead of the other stuff. The difference? ONLY 60 CALORIES versus 150 calories. That makes one of these pizzas only 137 total calories. So if you want to cut even more calories out allowing 2 of these awesome pizzas. Look for Joseph's. Here's a picture of the bag.

I love this! I used to make a similar pizza with soy sausage and mushrooms along with all the other good stuff. It was one of my favorite things to eat in the world. Hey....I think I need to make some of that pizza again soon! Thanks for sharing this with everyone!

I was really surprised, I think anyone who likes pizza should try this, the most impressive thing is how well it filled me up, of course I had a plum with it but still. If only I could find a way to get a deep dish crust and keep the calories under 300. I hate thin pizza but I was still pleased with this.

Yummers. I do something similar, but use Flatout wraps for the extra fiber. And it's a thinner crust. Thanks for posting so people can see how easy it is to make our favs healthy!

Pizza is my #1 trigger food . . . see basically every blog entry I've ever written . . . This looks yummy and so much better for me than the Lean Cuisine junk I've been getting my pizza fix from. I' shocked that the fat free cheese melted so well. Thanks for sharing!

I told you it works! I believe I mentioned it when you blogged about eating pizza (or was it a dream of eating pizza)
Anyway... I make these ALL the time!

I was really pleased with the results! The biggest concern was the cheese being fat-free, but it tasted pretty good melted, and retained a gooey stringy texture. 15 minutes in the oven @ 425 left the crust chewy, and 20 minutes left it more crunchy like a typical thin crust pizza.
