Reduced Waist = Reduced Waste

Friday, September 5th 2014

I have noticed a marked reduction in my food expenditures since I began this journey. I eat smaller meals even though I eat more often. Veggies and fruit are cheaper than meat. Leftovers become meals for the following day instead of morphing into a brown liquid in the bottom of the fridge because it is easier to eat them than it is to figure out the calorie content on another concoction. Plus, if I'm going to be charged 200 or 300 calories for something, I'm going to enjoy every single morsel of...

Hunger is Weird

Thursday, September 4th 2014

Some days are nightmarish while others are an absolute joy. When I got up on Tuesday morning I was famished and had to fight with it all day. Today is the exact opposite. I just had my first bit of food for the day (it is almost noon) and have not felt the least pangs of hunger. I ate an apple. That's it, just one apple. Progress

Wednesday, September 3rd 2014

There are days when I feel like I am going in reverse even though my clothes are looser, my diary shows I am well within my limit, and the scale tells me I've lost pounds. I feel sluggish and flabby regardless. Then I have to ask myself how I actually measure "progress." Further to that, what is progress anyway?

My purpose is to get healthy and live a fuller and longer life. So if I feel sluggish am I achieving that goal? Makes me wonder sometimes but I keep reminding myself t...

It's Really About Averages

Tuesday, September 2nd 2014

I sometimes forget that calorie counting is not a precise science, it is about averages and estimates. When I eat at a restaurant and log the calorie content from the menu or the restaurant's web site, I am assuming much greater accuracy than is reasonable. Have you ever watched a cook serve up food to a plate? Does it get weighed to the nearest gram? Or is it scooped up with a calibrated ladle? Probably not. Now, a cook will not keep his job for long if he repeatedly gives away food, but when y...

Losing Weight and Feeling Great

Saturday, August 30th 2014

Another week and another weigh-in. I look forward to Saturday all week long, not only because it marks the weekend but because it is my once-a-week opportunity to actually quantify my progress. Last week I weighed in at 306, this morning it dropped to 301.5. If anyone from the CK IT department is listening, "We need an emoticon for doing the happy-dance!!" :help: I visualize a miniature Snoopy on top of his doghouse just jiving away to the music playing merrily in his head. I know, there ...
