Waist vs. Waste

Saturday, August 9th 2014

I have always had a bit of trouble throwing away perfectly good stuff. :angry2: My parents were among those that cautioned against leaving food on the plate because "children in Asia are starving." I remember a comedy routine from years ago by Allan Sherman titled "Hail to thee, fat person" in which he lauds fat people essentially as martyrs for peace. The lyrics are:

I would like to explain how it came to pass that I got fat
Ladies and gentlemen, I got fat as a public servic...

My Second Kitchen

Thursday, August 7th 2014

I have the good fortune of having a job that I really enjoy and working with people that I like and get along with. The whole work environment is fast paced and low stress, which is conducive to high productivity. One of the perks is the ability to stock my own lunches in the office kitchen. We are also lucky enough to be a short walk from a Target store with a big grocery department. I have a roll-on duffle bag with a shoulder strap so I can carry it tot he store when I shop and put my treasur...

Accurate Portion Sizing

Sunday, August 3rd 2014

I made a pork roast in the crock pot overnight and it has spent the whole day getting yummy. I was in a quandary as to how I would determine the calories - PROBLEM SOLVED. I had to get some groceries so, while I was out, I purchased a food scale to take the guesswork out of determining portion sizes. Only $20 at my local Bed, Bath & Beyond. It's a bit like having a referee looking over my shoulder and blowing the whistle when I say, "That's about 4 ounces of meat." This thing i...

Another Dragon Has Been Slain

Saturday, August 2nd 2014

I was sitting at my computer this morning logging my breakfast when it occurred to me that I had not been to a movie in quite some time. My wife loves it when we go to a movie so I figured, "Why not?" Then it hit me - can I actually sit through an entire movie without an oil drum full of buttery popcorn?? Hmm. It is easy for me to eat healthy when I avoid facing my dragons. However, nothing is really gained for the long haul if I don't at least take a shot at dealing with them. Afte...
