Sunday, Apr 20 2008 - day of worship

Got to serve communion at worship today. There are three positions for assistants to worship. I got to serve wine to the other lay person's serving bread. It is such a joyful experience for me, filling to many senses.
There is the feel of the alb (I think that is the name of the robe), the scent of candles and bread. The worship service itself. Hearing service and music and worship from a different location than usual. Looking out to all the people (Body of Christ). And then looking into each person's face as I share the gift of His blood. (Always, I think of what a cannabilistic phrase - and also the miracle of communion, coming together in community.)
There is this dance of movement. Standing, sitting then moving to the altar, receiving the offering, moving the bread and wine, setting up the chalice.
Then it is done, and there is music to wrap around us as we leave the sanctuary.
Communion for me is best when I can immerse in the here and now of worship. When all I think on is what happens under that Sanctuary roof, all I hear are the words of service, the humming shuffling snorting breathing sounds of all of us plus the music and liturgy, smell the candles and sanctuary smells, feel the sanctuary feels of hard pew pench, alb, yeasted bread on my tongue, rich wine.
The visual of the beautiful gift of the sanctuary space. For me, it is a magnificent space. Probably modest in the scheme of American churches. Brick, stone, bronze, copper, wood. Very earthy, arty, creative.
I am fed, and ready for the week to come.
