OTTER's CalorieKing blog

In an earlier blog post, I'm certain I mentioned that I was reading James Frey's A Million Little Pieces. I mentioned the book to a friend, whose response was to laugh aloud. Apparently the book was debunked as fictional. (See http://www.thesmokinggun.com/jamesfrey/0104061jamesfrey1.html for one account.) Now I'm trying to figure out if the book, originally read by me as nonfiction, has any value to me as fiction.

Two main thoughts: a) I have not thought of myself as having any addictions. Yet if James Frey has touched even a kernel of truth about addiction there may be aspects of my nature or my interaction with the world that have been addictive in style. (Does that make sense as an English sentence?) b) I've wondered if there is a "cure" for addiction outside of twelve-step programs. Frey's writing makes it seem possible - at least worthy for more research on my part.

Over the last 20 or 25 years, it seems like I've run across many people who have sought help and benefited by participating in 12-step programs. And a few that nothing would help. At this point, I will say even Frey's fictional account has value to me because it makes me think about a topic that I avoid, but a topic which has relevance.

I am not familiar with the book Otter. I usually read a book because I am interested in it and not too much in what other people say about it. Gleam from a book what helps you.
I too know that CK goes on the traditional weight loss guide. They don't take into account medical problems that would effect weight factors, or how good of health you are in. The weight chart assumes you are in great shape and exercise daily and take no medications that can influence your weight. Now, the calorie count to maintain that weight does. It also assumes we all should be paper thin, or thin with no fat on us and that is healthy. I wonder if having a little fat on us is still ok, not that I want it. We all can't be super thin or completely fat free. So, I wonder about basing my goal on a chart too.

I say the book, even though it was not entirely true, is a well written book and has helped many. If it helps you in your journey then you just think of it as fiction!
