care of a hospice patient, that is.

Middle sister has spent the last 24 hours in a state of near catatonia. Her medications were changed, with all good intentions. But learning the full ingredients of the anti-nausea medication revealed that it contained three meds to which middle sister has never had good reactions.

Now we're not sure if she'll have the chance to have lucid days before she lapses into the worser times that are coming.

A near hour-long conversation with the on-call weekend nurse, and consult with our assigned nurse, gave us a game plan for meds to continue through the weekend. Still having hopes that things can improve with a few new medical techniques that will begin Monday. But everything seems so uncertain right now.

When it rains it pours -- My dad had an episode that took him to the hospital on Thursday evening. Suspected heart attack at first, but found severe anemia. A blood transfusion corrected the blood numbers. Now we're waiting to see if he has internal bleeding. He may be discharged Monday or Tuesday.

Great chance today to see how passionately our stepmom loves middle sister. She's been connected to our family for more than forty years. She watched and GUIDED us girls to adult hood. And as she learned more about how to be the best woman she could be, she has shared that knowledge.

I think my dad is handling the coming loss by distraction, escape, and anxiety. He and I have not talked about the serious topic of middle sister's disease and upcoming death. I hope I do get to hear his thoughts.

I watched my brother-in-law (baby sister's husband) care for middle sister today. He is a kind man, a careful man, a loving man. I am lucky to have him as brother-in-law, I'm glad baby sister has him as husband.

Realized I need to call my own hubby, holding down the fort 3K miles away, and come up with a plan. I hate telephones.

I've got a sore throat. Stress. Plus the germs that are an inherent part of a toddler's household (baby sister's daughter).

Okay, just lots of separate thoughts floating about.

GRATITUDE FOR VISITS, YOUR WORDS OF COMFORT BY BLOG, THE E-MAILS OF DISTRACTION/STORY/COMFORT. I am sustained by all of it.

Shalom, -Otter
