Friday, Nov 20 2009 - The next 30 pounds... here I come!

View PLATEOFSTARS's food & exercise for this day

So,

I had this "Fitness Assessment" yesterday at my gym. I normally avoid such tests at all costs cause who really wants someone telling them what they should eat and how they should exercise and how out of shape they are and how much weight they should lose especially when they know the person telling them this is doing so with a financial motive (buy personal training sessions....)

BUT, I did it because even though there is some "pushing" involved, they DO give you an assesment of your fitness level and I wouldn't mind someone external who can benchmark my progress for me.

A few downsides to the assessments - I could tell the guy assessing me wasn't used to talking to a vegan. He wanted to jump on my about getting enough of this or that nutrient, mineral, vitamin, etc... but by the time 15 questions/concerns had flown out of his mouth, he realized I pretty much have it under control.

He was going wild about me not getting Omega 3 fish oil and was pleading me to consider taking a supplement. I asked him, "doesn't it come from a fish? do you have to hurt or kill a fish to get it?" and of course he answered "yes" at which point I told him, "I won't take it." :sad2:

You can get other fatty acids from flax and although DHA and EPA are only found in fish oil, regulatory agencies do not accept that there is sufficient evidence for any of the other suggested benefits of DHA and EPA other than for cardiovascular health, and further claims should be treated with caution.

I know a lot of ways to promote cardiovascular health that doesn't involve taking a pill with fish oil in it. Sorry Mr Personal Trainer.... :P

Anyway, overall - the fit assessment went well. He was impressed to hear I'd lost nearly 30 lbs in the past 3 months and remarked that I "must be doing something right." :laugh5:

Then we looked at the results from my fit test and according to the software calculations from my measures and heart rate readings - I would need to get down to 172 lbs to be at 25% fat (healthy range for women being 18-25%). And do you know how long he predicted it would take... 3 months!

And, thinking about it now... OF COURSE it makes sense. It's taken me 3 months to lose the 30 lbs I've already lost so it goes without thinking twice that it would take around the same amount of time to lose the next 30 lbs.

But I just hadn't thought of it. I've been SO focused on getting under 200... I haven't even stopped to think about my next goal after that... and boy is it tangible! I know I can get there and... if I'm good... by my birthday even! (which is in April). :inlove1:

Three cheers to losing the next 30!
