Sunday, Nov 7 2010 - i miss running!
View RAEANNESISSON's food & exercise for this day
i am on week 4 starting tomorrow of P90X and we have been doing a modified version. my running partners and i have been doing the classic version and we switched out the yoga for a day of running, and some of the other cardio days we switched out accordingly. i am LOVING the results already but i am finding that i really miss the running.
i am a runner at heart. over the last year i have come to really enjoy the mental clarity and the pure sense of accomplishment that ALWAYS follows a good run. running cleanses my body, helps my digestion, keeps my heart healthy, lowers my RHR, and much much more. it calms my spirit and forces me to take time for me. 2 or 3 miles doesn't do it... it has to be at least a good 40 minutes or more.. but i LOVE IT and i have never found anything that was this good for me that i love this much.
P90X is going to help my running and i know this. i feel like i hit such a high with my half marathon and then SLAM... nothing. P90X is definitely challenging but it's a whole new world of muscle confusion and the cardio is NOT challenging (i think this is because of my conditioning through running).
i am training a friend for a 10k and because of this we are 'building' our miles up to the 6 mile mark. i am so proud of her because she never thought she could do more than a 5k and she is about to DOUBLE it! we ran our first 5 miler today and she did AWESOME.
but as busy as i am, working out 6 days a week, i just cannot get in any more running than what she and i are doing together... so i will have to wait to really get my miles back up until after our 10k. and i think maybe that month of lower mileage will be good for me. i am hoping i will be able to pick it back up like i didn't miss a beat. who knows? maybe the p90x will make me a stronger runner too.
all i know is the lack of long distance/regular running has caused a lack of focus. my eating has been crap, and it's a bad vicious cycle. i feel better today and somehow that HUGE calorie burn makes me want to keep my eating on par... but when i only burn 200 on a p90x strength workout it's such a lack of a sense of accomplishment... that's NOT right! i know that i am getting stronger and i can see my results, i am seeing TONING in my arms like crazy.
i am regrouping. i am moving forward. and i am going to ROCK in 2011.

After my first or second marathon (I can't remember) my husband and I did p90x. LOVED IT. I did two-a-day workouts. So I continued my regular running schedule (3-4 miles in the am) and in the evening we did p90x. I didn't do the cardio with him since I was already getting plenty of cardio, but I will say that the yoga isn't something you want to miss. I gained such flexibility and strength from the stretching and yoga, and it definitely helped the running. The yoga has great balance poses that work the tiny muscles in the legs that running doesn't touch, and the results for me were greater speed and endurance.
I know it's a lot of exercise, but like you I wasn't willing to give up my miles. I was seriously in the best possible shape at the end of the program, and each Saturday (our 'off' or stretching day) I got in a long run of 10 miles or more in order to keep me in the game of distance running.
You can definitely combine the two loves, and you'll love the results!
