Sunday, Mar 18 2007 - My first WW meeting

View ROCKINCHICK's food & exercise for this day

This one is for Bunny.
On Thursday I went to my first WW meeting in God knows how long. I was expecting to be shunned and actually to not be that many people there since we are a small town inside a big city. Well, the lady that registered me was great and very warm with lots of information. The meeting started a little late due to all the weighins but that was OK that night they were short staffed. Any way on to the meeting. As I sat down I noticed the board said "The Need to Feed". It wasn't about what we could eat for our points or any kind of food talk at all. It was about why we eat when we are not hungry for every emotion or situation we have. Then she talked about Reframing a tool to take the negative and make it a positive. I was very impressed at this meeting. Here is the article off the WW website. I hope you can read it from here.
Feel Instead of Feed is the name of the article.

"If eating doesn't solve any problems, why do people do it?" It's a silly question, but one with a point. It's easy to forget that food is meant for sustenance when it's so often used to fill a void other than hunger. But the consequences of emotional eating can wreak havoc on weight management. You can break the habit of reaching for food to satisfy your emotions, all it takes is a positive strategy.

"Comfort food" is what you're seeking when you eat out of insecurity, sadness, anxiety, stress, boredom or frustration. It's normal to use food in these situations, but overeating can lead to a whole new set of problems. How can you find relief from these emotions without food?

You've probably heard your Leader or other meetings members mention Reframing , a powerful resource from Weight Watchers Tools for Living. Reframing is a great way to figure out just what you need–other than food–to help comfort you.

Ask yourself what you're looking for when, say, you mindlessly munch your way through prime time television. Maybe instead of hunger, what you're really feeling is loneliness. Using Reframing, figure out how else you can get over your feelings of loneliness without food. You could call a friend or relative, invite your neighbor over for tea or chat with other people trying to lose weight on the Message Boards .

The next time you feel the need to feed your emotions, try acknowledging them instead. Figuring out exactly what you're craving can help you feel full and satisfied, physically and emotionally.

At your next meeting, ask those around you how they turn their thoughts from food to action when they feel the need to eat when they're not actually hungry.

I hope you enjoyed it as much as I did. See you all later.

Thank you for this. I have been thinking of reframing quite a bit myself. Cheers Judy
