Wednesday, Jan 7 2009 - 5K on Saturday...am I prepared?
View ROCKMOM2's food & exercise for this day
This may sound silly, but I am not too worried about the 5K...3.11 miles is not that far, and even if I didn't run it, there will be people walking. The group that is handling the run is called RAW (Runners and Walkers).
Someone had suggested I go and check out the location ahead of time. I still want to do that, but the days are slipping away.
Love my new Garmin 405 for the outdoor running but I am disappointed that I cannot track my calories burned using it on my treadmill without ordering the footpod for another $100. Decided I will purchase one of the polars for indoor use and actually picked up the F4 yesterday...think I will take it back for the F11, on sale for only $20 more...I am soooooo indecisive sometimes!--usually involving $$.
I will not be speedy on Saturday, I guess I am excited/nervous to see how I stack up against the rest of the folks running in the race. In school, since elementary, I was always the kid picked last for any sort of athletic event, from red rover to relays. In high school I even opted to be a "office monitor" instead of PE. So, this is really a HUGE accomplishment for me...sort of a dream that I never even imagined I had. You know what is the coolest thing about that? I GOT THAT DREAM FROM THE INSPIRATION I HAVE RECEIVED FROM ALL OF YOU!
Even those of you who are not runners, we are all working toward dreams---health, fitness, goals---we are all dreamers an inspirers!
Thank you all for being part of my world!

Hi Vicki, how wonderful... good luck on the run. You inspire me... I bought a mini-stepper yesterday, and started doing a few minutes already today.. "The Denise Austin, Air stepper with arm cords"... I can be indecisive also... someone once told me, "you don't have to decide right now, most things you can think about" it takes alot of pressure off me, and then I think it over, and get involved in something else, and alot of times, I am then able to make a decision. But, it does sound good if the one you want is $20 more and better... hope the run/walk went well today...that's amazing.

HI VICKI!!!
:)
:)
:)
Ok, I am just now reading your blog...I forget to look over at the blogs updates. I agree with EVERY comment made...you WILL be so much faster than you think, and will feel better during the race than you imagined you would. I totally agree about feeling "empowered"...doing something that most other women in their 40's and up say that can't do (even though they could).
Regarding the garmin...I am with you. I was very disappointed that it will only give me a calorie burn for outdoor running. I have the HRM, and it will record my hr when I am indoors, but it gives me a calorie burn of zero. That is kind of a bummer...I really wanted one gadget to do it all, and am not going to buy something else right now. However, I love the way that it records and updates outdoors.
I will definitely remember to look at your blog on Saturday for your race updates

I know you are going to do great, Vicki! If it makes you feel more at ease go and check the location out, and don't worry about how you do. I guarantee you will not be the last one -- glad we could help you along your way with this dream of yours. Thanks for you kind words today on our forum... you always make me feel better and I can't wait for you to post something. I'm glad you're part of my world now too! To answer your question on the blog, what do I love? You see that's the thing I'm trying to figure out.

You can do it! 5k really isn't that far and you will be surprised how the pack of people running will really carry you along. Just set a pace you can hold and stick with it. It's okay to walk if you are getting out of breath and really struggling. Start running again as soon as your breathing is more relaxed. It will be over before you know it.
I am a bit envious. I used to run regularly. In fact I have on my t-shirt from my first 10k that I finished in 58 minutes. Now I can't run around the block. I've gained 44 pounds since that 10K.
Please let me know how your run went. I hope that you find it fun and a positive accomplishment.

Vicki your race is going to be great! Make sure you don't start out too fast. It's much more rewarding to run faster at the end, than to slow down. Also, position yourself somewhere near the back of the runners if you think you will not be a real fast runner.
I was never athletically inclined in school either. We've both come down with Adult-Onset Athletic Disorder-- The inability to stay inactive!

You will do an amazingly great job at the race and surprise yourself. I am sure of it! You're prepared--you've done the training and you've run that distance before. It will be even more fun with the crowds and the support. Make sure someone can take your pic when you cross the finish line for us!
