Tuesday, Feb 19 2008 - Lunch meeting at a buffet
View TODDSTANFIELD's food & exercise for this day
I had a lunch meeting today with my faculty mentor at a Chinese Restaurant. I was optimistic about my ability to make healthy food choices because it was a buffet and I could pick and choose. I went to the buffet and got some rice noodles, fried rice, a tablespoon of lo mein, some boiled shrimp and vegetables. I also got a whole bunch of unseasoned broccoli. I had finished eating that plate and intended to stop with that plate.
The two people I was eating lunch with went back for seconds. I "felt" awkward not eating while they continued eating. I think my self-talk included something like, "It would make them feel uncomfortable if they continued eating while you just sit here and look at them". So, I got up and got some more rice noodles and like 5 pieces of sushi roll. I did not, however, get any dessert items, and I drank unsweet tea. This is my second day without diet soda.
What I could have done was stopped with the first plate of food. I could of told myself that I am responsible only for my health, and I am not responsible for whether or not other people are uncomfortable if I stop eating. If they asked about it, I could have said, "I am really trying to take much better care of myself. The food is good, and I am tempted to get another plate, but I know that I would feel sluggish later this afternoon". Or, here's an idea, "I'm full already".
But I realized on the drive/walk back to the office that I had learned something from that expereience. The Beck Diet Solution book talks a great deal about how to address those type of situations (eating more because of other people). Also, it is important for me to make a mental note that although buffets are good to allow more choices of healthy food, I need to set a limit of making only one trip to the buffet lines.
PM UPDATE:
I bought a 20 oz. Diet Coke out of a vending machine. Trying to stay away from colas. I drank my entire Sigg bottle of water before lunch today. I had added a South Beach Tropical Breeze drink mix to it. I was thirsty this afternoon. I could have searched the machines for a bottled water. But I didn't. I honestly was needing a "pick me up" (caffeine) due to being sluggish from overeating at lunch.
The plan tonight is not to eat again. Right now (6:07 PM-CST) I still feel very full. Let's see how it goes. I will be attending a special worship service at 7:00 on campus.
10:09 PM UPDATE:
Well, when I got home an hour ago, I was physically hungry. I put a Weight Watchers Smart Ones Smartwich Pepperoni in the oven and ate it. My wife and I are about to watch tonight's Biggest Loser. We recorded it via Windows Media Center.
