Do you live with a spouse who has Dementia or Alzheimer disease? If you do you know how alone we can be even though we are not alone.
My husband has been losing his memory for some time now, and it hurts to see him look at me, when I speak to him, as though I am speaking a foreign language.
It is so difficult for him to remember things, mostly current things, as he talks non stop about all the things he did when he was young. It hurts so bad when he can't remember anything that we have done together (I have been married to him for 17 years), but remembers everything about him and his deceased wife way back when...and even calls me her name at times)
It is pretty tough to find a support group in my town to go to, in order to socialize with people who I can carry on a conversation with. And I know I'm not alone.
Trying to cope with all the stress of life, with the added illness of a loved one, especially in our late years.... (he is 80 and I am 67), it seems that food is now my only enjoyment.
As I get heavier, I get more depressed, because I have to be here for him, and our rescued animals. So it's important that I keep myself healthy. Not just for him, but because I really want to, but I need some happiness too. And food gives me that comfort.
I thought since I am trying to lose weight despite the pitfalls of life, but because of the extreme amount of pressure of dealing with a loved one with such an illness, that it might be something that others might need in their life too.
Sometimes, we just need, a friendly remark from someone. A cute little joke to make us laugh. Some encouragement. Someone who UNDERSTANDS what we are going through.
