Yesterday I went to the hospital to get all the pre-op test done for my surgery. There I met a nurse who was taking down all my meds and other vital medical facts. She started to talk to me about my diabetes and my weight when I told her I had been losing and decreasing my insulin intake. Now this nurse was over weight herself and knew what I was doing was something special. She asked me if I wanted to know my BMI and I told her I pretty much knew where it was, but she could look it up anyway. Hey, I missed it by 2 points. The CK BMI guide was different from her chart what can I say. Anyway, I told her I have to get down to 135 before I am in the safe category and she was surprised I even knew that. Sure enough, she looked on down the chart and I was right about that. We continued our talk about diet and she asked me if I was on an insulin pump, check on that one too. Blood pressure, check, 120. over 80. She was amazed. All she could say was I wish I had your numbers. I was feeling kind of proud but kind of sad at the same time. Here was a nurse who taking down all this info on me feeling guilty because I think I was showing her what losing weight can do for a person and she knew she needed too lose her weight. She finally said to me. " I need to lose my weight, but I work!" It's hard to diet when you work and have to eat out all the time." Now CKers. I opened my mouth before thinking and said, "Yea, my husband, eats out every day too, but he's lost weight since he's learned how to watched it, besides you can all ways take your lunch. I always carry snacks with me when ever I go out, got an apple in the car now." She smiled because I caught her in her excuse, then I thought to myself, oops, I defiantly need to keep my mouth shut and opinions to myself. The nurse was indeed very friendly and had a problem with food just like me. I saw her latter on snacking on a candy bar. There are plenty of opportunities in that hospital to eat healthy. When I was in the x-ray room a fit doctor came in and asked me to shut my eyes and look the other way. I did. Then he opened the frig in the x-ray room and grabbed his illegal lunch from within. He smiled as I realized he was keeping his lunch in a forbidden location. He grinned and said it was lunch time. I had to chuckle. You see a lot of hospital workers bringing their lunches, so eating healthy anywhere is possible. I had even brought my yellow carrots, red peppers, an apple, diet drink, bottle of water, soy bar, and soy milk for coffee. I planned on stopping by Subway for a mini Turkey sub to add to my lunch and snacks while I was in the area. So, even I had planned for the days activities. Yes, I know most of the CKers work in office buildings. Some of you have access to friges
where you can keep snacks. The rest of you all could take mini coolers like what I do when I'm out. My hubby has a microwave at work, but beware, those things need to be cleaned by someone for sanitation purposes.
Now for the operation. It's a trigger thumb for those who missed the news. Nothing serious. The doc releases the ligament around the thumb so I can bend it. This is similar to a Carpal Tunnel operation only recovery is suppose to be quicker. It's the scar tissue that is the hardest thing to recover from. I scar a lot. Inside scars can take up to a year to soften an stop hurting. Scaring can also hinder movement. That's what I'm worried about since the thumb is on my writing and drawing hand. I use my chefs knife with my right hand, but draw with my left. The operation is Wed. I'll have stitches in for 10-14 days. So, I don't know if I'll be blogging much. I'll be able to read everyones blog and put in smiles, but maybe no comments. I might say hi. Something like that on my blog for a while until I can type. The greatest challenge will be that the operation is in the afternoon. I will have to keep my bg high without eating. This is where having a pump is nice. I can turn down the pump and it should help get my blood sugar up. I will have to not take any insulin for morning BK too. The Doc told me to stay on my diet during recovery. Yea!!!!!
Well After my pizza fiasco, I still lost a pound this week, but it didn't show up until today. Weigh in was yesterday! I went ahead and changed my weigh number because I was a little "c" too all week. I don't want next week to show I lost more weight than I was suppose too which sometimes happens if I don't report weight loss the week before. This week with surgery, I'm not going to expect any loss since I might have to eat a little more to keep my blood sugar up.
Talk to you all latter.

Don't feel bad about what you said to the nurse--it was the truth and I'm sure you didn't say it in a self-righteous way. You gave her "food for thought" and she can do with it what she wants. Yeah, it takes more effort to lose weight when you're busy, but it's not impossible. Good luck with the surgery! I'm sure you'll come through it all fine. :smile1:

What a neat idea to donate the cookies! Usually, having them in the house doesn't bother me but for some reason, that one leftover cookie, all alone......yes, WW serving for pasta and rice still shows as 1/2 cup. (4 points each!) = 200 calories or so! Pasta is a rare treat in my house!

Its an amazing phenomenon, Lory. Amazing how one person's journey impacts people. You never know how just one thing that you say will change them. Unfortunately, it can bring out people's insecurities about themselves, but, who knows that nurse may go home and think about it, and decide if you can do it, she can too. Congrats on your loss, and good luck with the surgery. Be sure to let us know how you do.
