View THEFATCHICK's food & exercise for this day

Sunday came way to fast! Yesterday was my family BBQ at my sister's house, so happy to see my big brother, I hugged him and didn't want to let go... I can't believe we almost lost him too! He looked good, still very overweight but he is trying and working with his doctor, he lost a few pounds and managed to quit smoking so kudos to him:)

I come from a family of BIG people with very poor eating habits. I was in dangerous territory with food and I felt the need to pull my sister D aside to tell her I was concerned about her youngest sons health... He is 10 and so heavy he has trouble reaching to wipe his own hiney and struggles to tie his shoes. It got a little intense but she knew I was coming from a place of caring, she was just in denial. It makes me a little mad cause she grew up overweight (I was the bean pole) and she knows first hand how he must feel and still keeps junk in the house and takes him to Mc Donald's daily. It wasn't the time to push the issue, didn't want to cause a fight with my brother in from NY, this is the 1st time we have seen him since he was in the ICU in January. I will not let this go, I will gently keep bringing it up when we talk when I ask her how the kids are doing.

I thought I would share the picture above...my friend's son bought a shake from a popular fast food franchise, poured it into a glass and forgot it overnight, this is what it looked like in the morning...look at all the oil sitting at the bottom! No wonder my stomach hurt so bad the last time I had one from its competitor...now THIS is really FOOD for THOUGHT!!!

They all made fun, teasing me for bringing my own food; I saved hundreds of calories by packing a green side salad w/ my own dressing, bringing marinaded chicken, sweet potatoes dressed in a mixture of 1 TBS olive oil , 1 tbs white balsamic vinegar and vegetable seasoning (wrapped in foil) and grilled there. They all made fun but tried my healthy food and liked it. They all had the traditional fat and cholesterol laden potato and macaroni salads, stuffed burgers on white rolls and chicken smothered in sugary thick BBQ sauce. I really enjoyed my meal especially as I watched them chow down knowing how much unnecessary fat and calories they were consuming. I think the healthiest thing they all ate was the clams I brought up that were eaten raw (the steamers were dipped in a clarified garlic butter with fresh basil).

I knew exactly how many calories I had left over after dinner because I recorded everything before I left and used my phone to check my calories, serving size and update as I had a handful of Stacy's pita chips. I felt very confident and because I knew exactly how many calories I was consuming, there was no anxiety about what I could or couldn't eat, how much I did or didn't eat and I was able to fully enjoy the time with my siblings.

No quotes today, I feel very content and happy... I'm going to burn off some more calories by cleaning my house and going food shopping... My husband requested the chicken I made for myself yesterday and one of my filling green salads ( he's thin and can eat what he wants), happy he's on board :)

Enjoy the rest of the weekend!

You seem like a very gentle, caring soul - the perfect person to be sensitively nudging your sister and her son along. Change takes time and food means comfort to so many. But you're modeling excellent behavior and I'm sure they are taking some of that in. Glad to hear you were w/your brother. Know what that means :) And yes, try the tostadas! Half of what I put on it was chopped kale and cabbage (uber healthy) but the smear of avocado/bean dip was enough to keep my inner bad child happy. It can be done! Best, Cheryl55

Wow -that was inspiring! I tend to be a "go with the crowd" eater but next time I'll try to plan ahead and be better prepared. Well done!:)

First off Cindy..thanks for the encouraging compliment on my blog..I so appreciate it.:wave1:

BRAVO for sticking to your guns and eating healthy despite being surrounded by sugary and fat laden options..your mental toughness and discipline is truly impressive..wow!:thumbu2:

I think you must really care about your sister and her family..if I had to hear some hard truths about lifestyle choices that drag me down I'd rather hear it from someone I know truly has my best interests at heart..and I know for me that would be my sister..
