This is important, because everyday we are bombarded with half-truths about food. For the most part, the messages have the same objective - to get us to buy and consume more of it. CalorieKing food data sets the record straight about the caloric value of the foods we encounter each day.
The science is clear, obesity, left untreated, will return. Many researchers and healthcare providers now recognize obesity as a chronic disease. Treatment involves vigilant behavior change and encouragement. The early 1970s gave birth to many diet programs. In fact, the low-carb craze of the late 1990s was born in the Seventies. Yet even then, while others were experimenting with diets and tinkering with alternative weight loss methods, Allan Borushek, health educator and clinical dietitian, was focused on a more balanced and scientific approach, based on total calorie moderation and lifelong learning.
Because reliable nutrition data was not readily available for many popular foods, Allan began to collect his own data. He subsequently published the first "Calorie, Fat & Carbohydrate Counter" in 1973 in Australia, and in the U.S. in 1988.
The CalorieKing brand was born in 1996 with the launch of CalorieKing.com. The Web made the introduction of brand foods easier and offered a reasonable means to deliver updated information as food companies changed their recipes or product lines. The CalorieKing food database now includes more than 80,000 foods.
In 2003, CalorieKing University, a comprehensive course on nutrition, weight management, and lifestyle change was added to the CalorieKing site, making the CalorieKing Club (now called the CalorieKing Program) the first online diet program to place calorie-education and at its center.
Today and as time goes by, CalorieKing is about lifelong weight control. To be sure, CalorieKing helps people lose weight, but our mission is to help people gain control of their weight and stop the annual diet ritual. Losing weight is almost always the first step, but lifelong weight control is the prize we seek.
