Place mushrooms in a saucepan with water and margarine. Cover and simmer until soft, about 7 to 10 minutes.
Remove from heat and cool slightly. Stir in flour and pepper to form a smooth paste.
Slowly start to add the milk, return to heat and continue to add the milk while stirring. Cook until smooth and thick.
Place mushrooms in a covered microwave dish with water and margarine. Cover on HIGH for 5 minutes.
Remove and cool slightly. Stir in flour and pepper to form a smooth paste.
Slowly add all the milk, stirring while you do so. Return to microwave and cook on HIGH for a further 5 minutes, stopping and stirring once or twice while cooking. Sauce should be smooth and thick.
Can replace buttery spread with an equal amount of margarine.
