Grrrrrr in-laws...
Not only are they incredibly annoying to me (seriously, who farts at the dinner table?? THEY DO), but whenever we go there, I can pretty much forget about having any healthy choices available to me. Everything is cheesy this, mayonnaise that. So I can do one of the following:
1) Sit there and drool and eat micro-portions while the family belches/farts and descends like a plague of locusts on the cheesy/mayonaissey/fatty bliss of their dinner (which probably is what makes them so darn gassy, now that I think about it...);
2) Employ the "when in Rome" philosophy - minus the belching/farting, thankyouverymuch;
3) Bring a healthy salad for everyone to share - which will promptly be ignored and utterly wasted because the idea of anything fresh and green is evil in their eyes (canned green beans are their idea of healthy); or
4) Bring my own meal and risk further judgment from them (they already can't stand me, especially my sister-in-law).
I've taken to "pre-eating" before I go over there. Just before we leave, I chow down on some carrots or nuts or something. My husband invariably says, "You'll spoil your dinner," to which I silently reply in my head, "That's the idea, sweetheart!"
Groan.
I do my best when I'm away from the influences of other people. At work, during the day, it's nothing but low-calorie, healthy stuff; being at home is a struggle. Even though I've even gotten my husband to come around a little when it comes to watching what we eat, he still talks of making a run out to go get ice cream, which is like kryptonite to my new, healthy lifestyle.
It's not easy. Not easy AT ALL.

Sounds tough, but you are definitely realistic about what the challenge is and what your options are. That's the important thing I think.

I totally understand the in-law thing. I just spent a weekend with mine and went to the supermarket and bought my own healthy food so I didn't eat what they ate. My husband will do the same thing saying he wants fast food or something. If I could go off by myself for a little while without other influences I would lose weight with no problem. You are right. It's not easy.
