Saturday, Jun 16 2007 - in the nail salon

View WILLLOSEIT's food & exercise for this day

they sat in the nail salon
oblivious
superficial
nasty
women of privilege
the kind of woman
i love to hate

they talked incessantly
making inappropriate comments
shouting their thoughtless opines
for all of us to hear

they were everything
i never want to be
seemingly heartless and
full of venom
vipers

i tried to ignore them
but they didn’t want that
or else they would have
spoken in hushed tones
instead of in voices
that echoed throughout the shop

they made all the patrons cringe
as they barked at the young ladies
pampering their hands
busy doing their jobs
trying not making eye contact
with these horrible women
who needed to leave
please leave
now

and then their children arrived
where they were
up until then
i do not know
but in they waltzed
young ones
demanding manicures
and running wild
with mommy’s permission
and mommy’s ignorance

please stop, i uttered
mostly to myself, but out loud
because now it was way too much
any peace
any quiet
any chance for relaxation
was gone forever
at that moment
poof

i felt sorry for the staff
nowhere to hide, i thought
from these narcissistic women
and their bossy children
who didn’t care
about anyone
or anything
except themselves
except themselves

i am amazed at their numbers
these people
self-centered, uncharitable
pretentious caricatures
of wealth and privilege
busy poisoning
the next generation
with their rudeness and conceit
and it makes me so sad

but then i didn’t
have to paint their toes
or massage their backs
or take their abuse
i was leaving
none to soon, i thought
none to soon

i tip linda
with a generous hand
and say my goodbyes
because she is sweet
and kind
and works hard
6 days a week
and doesn’t deserve
the tirades of self-centered women
who fill the nail salon
with their selfishness
and ignorance
that is not bliss

i left these two women
still spewing loudly
and their children
still running amuck
and i was glad
to be out in the silence
of the noisy street
where i could hear
my own thoughts
and be thankful
i am not one of them

:hi: Grace. That is precisely the reason I quickly quit going to nail salons. I may not now appear totally refined and polished, from tip to tips, but hey, it just adds to my eccentric style and charm =D! I am sorry that you had that experience, but I totally relate--there is waaaay too much unconsciousness and pride based in ignorance within our society and it is totally maddening to witness and tolerate (in fact, I suspect that when I am old, with long and curly salt-and-pepper hair, I won't tolerate women like that, but smite them with self-assured power in wild-aged wisdom **heehee**!). . . . Here's to all the grounded, kind, and REAL Women, who deserve to have the "W" of their gender standing-up in bold capital!!!! Keep rocking the world with whole-hearted real-ness Grace :thumbu2:! Love ya, Kristen :heart1:

:wave1: I know what that's like. I don't go to a nail salon very often and people like that are one reason. I also know how it feels to deal with those kind of children as I had to in a couple of the retail stores I've worked in. I hope you enjoy your evening out. Have a great weekend. :)

That is really terrible. People think that if you provide a service then they can treat you and the surroundings as if they own it. Just because someone provides service to the public, does not mean they should not be respected or anyone in the place who is there. Kinda funny you mention manicure because I just want yesterday after my doctor appt. for a pedicure. Which Is only my second time and I did manicure to celebrate my short goal weight loss. Every ten pounds I am going to celebrate it with something that I enjoy or a new experience. But, I would hate to go somewhere like what you experienced, I like a place where everyone is is treated the same and no big egos. Well, hopefully next time you go it will not be so bad. Or maybe if possible try to go when there is less people, but that probably will not make a big difference due to it can be one person or more and sometimes people are ignorant. Take care and have a great weekend.

I had to check your profile to make sure you don't live where I do! I guess rude people are all over this fine nation of ours! I hope you enjoyed your manicure regardless.

I really love the way you write. I've never been to a nail studio, never even had a manicure, but I could see it so vividly.

:wave1: I have never been to a nail salon....but I am sure what you are saying is true....I really hate it when kids are allowed to run amuck...They use to do that at the retail store I worked at...Hope you are having a good day....:)

Yup!. This is why I like the place I go to. I have yet to see an ego. No, not true. I was there once and this lady was yelling into her cell phone as the owner was coloring her artifical snow white hair. 5 people had to leave the area because of her. Yuck.

Have a wonderful weekend Grace. Enjoy our NY sunshine.
