View WILLLOSEIT's food & exercise for this day

there are things
that I have been doing
since I can remember
to fight the battle of the bulge
my bulge
that just keeps getting
bigger and bigger
despite all my efforts

I haven’t had a real soda
since tab
remember tab?
coco cola’s answer
to the prayers
of the diet generation
with the unique taste
not quite coke
not quite bad
not quite good
but good enough

got milk?
not whole milk
not in my house
not in my mouth
since 1963
when my mom
snuck skim milk
into my cup
and i pretended it was awful
because that’s what a 9 year old does
when she hears the word diet
and has to make sacrifices
that 9 year olds
just shouldn’t have to do

the last time i
ate wonder bread
i was busy wondering
whether someone
would ask me to the 8th grade dance
no one did
but i went anyway
because that’s what you do
when you are chubby
and can't eat wonder bread
anymore

i don’t use sugar in my coffee
nope, never have
not since i was 18
and began drinking coffee
in the diner
late at night
with mary and jane
talking about life
and love
and losing weight
and what would we do without
sweet and low
those were the days,
my friends

you say butter
i say buttah
but what i really
used to say
was margarine
trans fat loaded
artery clogging
margarine
all of sudden
we find out
that some of the things
we were doing
to help us get fit
might kill us
and, my luck
i'll still be fat

but I will keep trying
all the new things
that come along
some will taste good
others surely won't
but i'll try them anyway
because
if it makes the battle
more tolerable
then it makes it more winnable
and that makes me happy
yes, it really does

because through it all
there’s one thing
that has never changed
my desire
to get there
i may not have always been
on the right path
but i always wanted to get there
so i will keep trying every
trick in the book
every low-fat, low-sugar
light this, light that
product they come up with
until i do
until i do

so for now
if you don’t mind please
i’ll have a salad
with dressing on the side

:hi: Grace, I am glad that you enjoy finding out what works for you and what doesn't--that's what this journey takes. For me, I come from a history of really good cooking with really good ingredients, which sometimes means diet dangerous ingredients, but I have learned that I happier in my quest to use a little of the most natural and highest quality things than I am using plenty of the diet-proof things. I recently got a subscription to "Cooking Light" and it is really all about using the best ingredients in a low-cal and healthy way--I am relearning how to cook :). . . . Anyway, here's to the best of bliss along the way to us both :thumbu2:!!! Love ya, Kristen :heart1:

Wow, my history too. I never had whole milk in my house, always skim. We always drank Tab or diet RC or whatever. Sometimes, when we were being "bad" we had ice cream, my mom and dad got their own quarts, pints for me and my brother. I heard my ice cream call from the freezer, my brother didn't, his would last for weeks. You might not realize it based on my weight, but I truly relate to your story and your struggles. Compulsive eaters come in all shapes and sizes. Thank you for sharing your stories. Thank you for sharing your wonderful style of writing. :)

:y: How do you do this? Write like this every day and each one is so good. I do wish these headaches were migraines which I only had once a month during you know what. These are TMJ from a work accident in 97, and are daily. :bang: Same as a migraine with no end in sight.
You have a great day tomorrow.

Ah, so true. Even on my "clear liquid regime" I didn't use real sugar, or real soda. Never do. For me, the latest and greatest is butter spray and salad spritzer. :) Great poem! Thank you for sharing.

"clap""clap""clap".
I always thought that diet soda was a gift to the overweight.
Foiled again.
Phosphorous depletes your bone's calcium.
Unnatural sweetners, heaven only knows what they have done. Grace, another home run.
Please come and play in my new thread: "Time Machine. Where , when and with whom."
;);););););););););)
As always,
Rona
