no one is like me
and there is no one like you
let us celebrate!

i am not like anyone else
never was
even as a child
i had curly,
and i mean curly hair
still do today
but chemicals
take care of the curls now
as i try to look like everyone else
but really, i don’t
and why should i?

my eyes,
they are very blue
even at my weight
my eyes get noticed
in the operating room
last year
a male nurse commented
“your eyes are gorgeous”
he bellowed loudly
making small talk
during a big procedure
i almost laughed
as he gazed into my eyes
and spoke his praise
really, he gazed
yes they make me,
me, don’t they?

i love to sing
still do today
i have a good voice
not great, but good
i’ve done theatre
the local kind
but the grind
got to be too much
and so i stopped
a long time ago
now i sing in my car
my husband laughs
when i don’t get the words right
but still, i sing
because it makes me happy
and why shouldn’t i be happy?

i love broadway
any theatre, really
mostly musicals
big productions
people living
their dreams
to be on stage
and perform
we go as much as we can
and now
my husband
he loves theatre too
i guess we are rubbing off
on each other
isn’t that what couples do?

i still don’t love golf
the way he does
but perhaps someday
i will
so i will keep trying
no matter what
because i know
it will make him happy
if one day
i share his love of golf
and i will be happy too
but still unique
and still me
that’s ok isn’t it?

different strokes
for different folks
sly and the family stone
sang that song
in the 60s
when celebrating
our uniqueness
was what we did
the message
that changed the world
or did it?

we need to celebrate
our differences today
we don't walk
in the same shoes
and that's ok
why paint someone
with another person’s brush
or
judge a book
by its cover
before we get
to the good stuff?
ah, we miss so much
because we fear
a difference
instead of embracing it

but i embrace me now
loving who i am
exactly as am
i will lose some weight
to be healthier
not to be someone i am not
or meet someone else’s
definition of beauty
but to be a better me
my heart will still be loving
my love will still be unending
my joys will still be my own
and i will celebrate
the new me
that is really just the old me
in a different size!!

please join me
and celebrate
your differences too
viva la difference!

vive la difference. Embracing who we are. My daughter Chris, who has struggled with her weight, says it was only when she did this that she began to lose. [She's ChristineGr and has reached her goal.] She is a singer, too, as well as her twin Caroline. She has a beautiful voice. It was their dream to make a CD together. Chris is a graphic designer and had designed the jacket for the CD. Chris is on a CD with John P. Kee in a song "When will we sing the same song?" If you go to Itunes you can listen to a little clip. She sings a duet with him. Of course, she never received a dime, even though the song was picked for a Gospel 1999 compilation, and then was re-released recently. They had hired an attorney, and were working on getting a sponsor for a CD, when everything in Caroline's life -- and ours, to a lesser degree -- fell apart. Short story - we all were kicked to the curb. Chris sings now at our new church, with trepidation. Caroline is, with God's grace, and a lot of prayers, getting back up on her feet after she spiraled down into the pits. Yes, we were never meant to be clones of anyone. Thank you for your poem, and the beautiful thoughts behind it.

Yet another insightful winner. I remember the day I LIKED me with all my good and bad points. It was .....breathtaking. And I have continued down that road of celebrating who I am. Grace, each time you write, you touch my soul and make me smile and nod YES!
