Saturday, Jul 21 2007 - autumn in july
View WILLLOSEIT's food & exercise for this day
i woke up early today
earlier than i have
in months
ok, i had to take Ralph
and his friends to the airport
(off to michigan for their
annual golf trip)
but still i was up and out by 6:00 am
it's different at this hour
especially on saturdays
we were at the airport in 20 minutes
and i was home before 7:00 am
ready to face the day
really, i was ready
on the drive home
i noticed the morning people
you know the ones
out for their walks
riding their bikes
walking their dogs
enjoying the crisp,
comfortable
solitude
of a mid-october morning
but wait
it's july
what has happened
to the not so sweet heat
and the not so pleasant humidity?
it's 63
63 wonderfully,
mild,
delicious
degrees
apparently,
someone stole july
while i was sleeping
and i am ok with it
actually
i am not sure
if i want it back
at least
not just yet
now i sit
with my windows
opened wide and a
cool, gentle breeze
caressing my toes
as it cascades in
through my back door
mother nature
playing tricks on us
perhaps
but it is a gift
a gift
of autumn in july
a vivid sun
is anchored
by a cloudless
pastel sky
playing her role as
illuminator
her heat
a gentle simmer,
if that at all
a perfect day
for a garden
just to be
outside
enjoying a
wonderful respite
from the dog days
which i suspect
will be back
someday very soon.
but not today
no, today is a day
meant for unwrapping
slowly
to savor the gift
of fragrant air
the roses in bloom
with the
morning dew
settled on their petals
it is glorious
the wonders of our maker
alive
i will take this day
and make a good memory
and save it in a jar
by my bed
and when the haze
and humidity returns
i will close my eyes
and think of this gift
of a day in july
and remember
that autumn
is really not
so far away
if i had a hammock, thats where i would be right now

It was beautiful here today too....very rare low humidity day. I just came in for the evening and it was almost cool. I enjoyed it while I could. Hope you don't miss your honey too much!

Beautiful poem. It didn't get that cool here. It's still in the 80's but less humid. Beautiful description of it, Grace.
 The place we stay at in Block Island is called The Mitchell House. They don't advertise or have a real estate agent - it's all just word of mouth. My art teacher has the whole house for the first week, and part of it the second week that we go. The hotels there are very quaint as well. When we go it's September and the busy season is over, it's pretty quiet, and the weather is perfect - I love it. There's lots of weddings there on the weekends and partying - I imagine that's what the peak season is like during the week too.

Last night when the window were open the air wafted in and around me. My first though was Autumn. I love Autumn.

Grace, thanks for the new butterfly name.
Goat Weed butterfly hmmm. I am going to look up this flier.
Years ago before Nyack was completely built up the Monarch butterflies would make their pilgrimage in mass down the street between the Charlie's Fish Market and the Police Station. I had a store there. When my partner and I saw them coming we would close up. Take our folding chairs out with our folding table and sit in the middle of this yellow, black and orange profusion.
I was attached to butterflies before that event. I had to do a thesis on color and essence. My question was whether the butterfly conveyed it's essence without color.
Again, and I am sure it wasn't just me feeling that you caught in words what we were all thinking.
Thanks,
Rona
